People will pick different specialists also for different play styles. There will be “meta” and you’ll see youtubers saying “x specialist is best!” And you have meta gamers jump on that. Best you can do is balance the gadgets/skills they do.

Specialists are, unfortunately, one of the worst design decisions made for BF in a while. Not because they are inherently terrible, their sole concept are fine and are well executed (ish). The problem lies within Battlefield's core and how its balance for gadgets, weapons, and teamplay were all designed around it for a long time. I did actually have a long ass analysis for BF2042 with an example for this, hold on

Take this scenario for instance: You join a match of BF4 in progress, you notice that your squad that you've joined has 2 Supports and an Engineer, so you choose Assault with meds and a defib to be the all-rounder in combat and healer for your squad. As you spawn on your squad however, you notice a large number of other Assaults with med boxes strewn about the place, and large fight going between everyone, directed a singular set of building on a point. From these observations you've made in no more than 15 seconds, you've already deduced the best general direction to go and then analysed an ongoing situation around you, allowing to make a more informed decision for when you next enter the loadout menu; you could keep the defibs and put on a 40mm, keep the medical equipment, but alter your weapon choice to fit the scenario you've currently found yourself in, or just roll with it and see how you go. Regardless of your choices in this scenario, you will be able to contribute to both the squad and team because of the class you have picked has a dedicated role that it is designed to fulfil, for both dealing with enemy team and to help your own.

Now let's run this same scenario again, but with the specialist system: You join a match of BF2042 in progress, you notice that your squad has 2 Support-based specialists and an Engineer-based specialist, so you choose an Assault-based specialist, thinking that the Support specialists are split so one heals and revives, and the other is ammo supplies and area denial. You grab some offensive orientated kit and spawn in, only to see that both of the Support specialists have chosen neither medical, nor ammo supplies and opted instead rocket launchers, one AA and one AT, and instead the Engineer has the ammo box instead. You look around to see some med and ammo boxes scattered about but no clue who's they are from your team. You are now faced with a dilemma: do you continue being an Assault and try to go on the offensive without knowing how reliable your health and ammo support will be. Or do you choose a different specialist to try and fill the hole that been left by your squadmates, unknown if/when they'll do the same?

The obvious difference between these two scenarios is the information that you have immediately available to you when load into a game and spawn for the first time, and how reliable that information is to you. With a rigid class system, with dedicated roles and jobs each class performs, you can read and react to any situation very quickly and very effectively, as the rules are simple and have little variation outside the constant unknown of your teammates themselves. However, relaxing this system to any degree, loosening restrictions and limitations that classes would otherwise impose, creates a lot more unknown variables that people will have to account for. The more unknown variables people have to try and account for, the harder it will be for those people to find a strategy effectively use.
