The M1918 (real name was simply Beretta M1918) was originally a semi-auto rifle that was designed with the top mounted mag to apparently make it easier to insert it (nevermind blocking 90% of your view anyway). When they prototyped the full auto version it was very prone to jamming and was pretty damn inaccurate
