so, progression is not a necessarily bad thing, if used correctly. If it is the form of a meaningful choice (like builds in dark souls) it can add replayability and depth. Or if its used to slowly introduce concepts as to not overwhelm the player, like in DOOM Eternal or TF2, it can be used to better initiate new people.

However, the vast majority of progression systems I see in multiplayer games boil down to "complete a checklist because you cant find anything better to do in this game"

But PS also has the illusion of real life elements as well. They don't go full blown realism. If you play tank combat in that game, you quickly realize the devs purposely screw up how those tank cannons would penetrate to balance the game out. So they have balance in mind, its just more noticeably bad when you make a game out to be realism induced
