plenty of games are played cause theyre intrinsically fun. The ones that arent are abandoned when the next game comes out. You think minecraft and fortnite needed progression to become some of the most played games in the world? How about TF2, Dota, Rocket League, or Counter Strike, sitting comfortably on the top of the steam charts for years?

progression is not a downgrade for games. Back in the day you used to play a multiplayer game and all that you would have is good multiplayer. I dont see how good customization and progression unlocks such as new weapons and clothing/accessory options dampens gameplay

Agreed, i also just bought bf4 on steam a couple days ago and was thinking the same thing about attachments. I really prefer that you get the stuff right away so its balanced and you are free to do what you want, but there are some extra / non necessary things you can add to your collection.

TF2 - all items are completely random
Dota 2 - no progression
Rust and Ark - no quests
Minecraft - no quests
Fortnite - progression is paywalled.

that is the gameplay. Its it not an external thing. There is no "kill 5 creepers to earn a diamond". The rewards are internal. You make them yourself
