I'd prefer the game play, Dedicated LAN server, Size and Scope, Player Classes (not characters), mod/map support, vehicles, squad sizes, and squad leader/commander roles of BF2 and the destructibility and graphics of BF4 or newer. BF2 was just such an awesome game, both online and for LAN parties, that they need to go back to that game, but with a major graphic/physics/destructibility overhaul. BF2 stuck around for quite a while, I believe, for a few reasons...

-It was a great game in general
-The commander roles and the sub-missions it created (e.g. take out the enemy commanders assets/repair your own) was unique and create a more organized/teamwork-oriented experience
-People could run their own servers (people like that). Plus, it was great for large LAN parties
-Add-ons (e.g. Special Forces), user created maps, and Mods kept it going (e.g. Point of Existence mod was great and added some awesome maps/modes)

I have run some large LAN party events for charity (~150+ people) and BF2 was a huge hit for a long time. It was just plain great for playing with friends (and potentially lots of them). The 6 person squads were way better than the 4 person squads of 2042. If you have 1-4 people, not much difference, but when you want to play with 5 people in BF2042, for example, you have do squads of 2 and 3 or 4 and 1. It's no much nicer to be able to fit 5-6 on a squad, with difference complimentary classes (not characters, save that for single player... In BF2, I'm just one of many, a special super hero), and if you get 7 or more friends playing together and are forced to split squads, you can do 3 and 4 players to squad, to still have a nice compliment of classes.

That's why I'd LOVE to see an updated version BF2, maybe BF2v2. ; - )

P.S. After the changed made in BF3 and later, the large group of gaming friends I've played with have been kind of splintered, some buying various newer versions of BF, but none has captured the attention enough (like BF2 did) for all of us to buy into new versions and make it a gaming staple for our group.

For me, I really liked the graphic updates and destructibility introduced in BF3/4, but the lack of dedicated server made it much harder to use for LAN parties and the lack of commander role and the associated side missions/comms/intel/guidance just wasn't as satisfying as BF2. Again, to clarify, I wouldn't suggest "going back" to play BF2, rather, I'd suggest that the game play and other various features of BF2 (map/mod support, self-hosted dedicated servers, commanders, larger squads, etc) be used as the base idea for their next version, around which they could add the improved physics/graphics/movement mechanics, etc from the newer versions. i.e. Took what worked well and made it popular and improve on it, instead of limiting it, dumbing it down, and making people be spec-ops heros instead of just another soldier doing a job.

Honestly that's not even on my wishlist.. this is what I care about:

1. Classes (pretty much expected at this point given the 180 they pulled on 2042 to cram classes in after the fact)
2. Class-locked weapons with at least one open category like carbines or PDWs (e.g. bf4 system)
3. Maps designed for each mode so it's not, for example, BT on a map optimized for CQ.

If they hit those 3 I don't care so much about the rest. They can keep using specialists for all I care as long as it's either different ones per faction or reskinned per faction. They can keep with fancy gadgets like scatter grenades, cyberwarfare, and deployable shields. Doesn't matter to me.

Give me a class, a sensible weapon, and a map that plays well for the mode I'm in and the rest all falls into place

haven't played COD since the original (which had a pretty good single player game too, IIRC). I get what you're saying though, and that's why I think having larger squads and a commander that can get an overall view of a battlefield and put together a more cohesive plan of attack to secure the teams victor, and/or react to changes on the battlefield really helps pull a team together. Plus the fact that a commander in BF2 could provide support to squads that supported his strategic goals and ignore requests from squads that are off doing their own that thing, puts a certain level of accountability to be a team player. e.g. if commander supplies a fast-mover vehicle to a guy and that guy (maybe more than once) is just using the vehicles to see how much air he can catch off a hill, then maybe you stop giving vehicles to that guy (who could easily do that in single player or on an empty server) and give it to the squad that is trying to move in quick to destroy the enemy commanders artillery or radar.

Yeah, besides the usual capturing of flags, having a deployed soldier as a commander, in my opinion, gives you so many other options how to play. Can't seem to take and hold flags, maybe their command is doing a really good job at providing intel/support, maybe it's time to change tactices and take out his UAV or maybe the commander himself? Doing that wouldn't only deny intel/support to enemies, but it might also force the commander to pull troops back to fix his assets if that want to continue to get that good support. Troops getting overrun? Maybe drop some artillery on them, so they need to pull troops off the front line for a special anti-commander asset mission. I just found that a lot of times, when something wasn't working, there was something else you could try and might change the course of the battle. Overall the team voting of commanders in/out can help with lame commanders on busy servers, and a good commander will often be voted back in for the next map is they showed good leadership and support for most people.

Interesting idea, as long as it isn't the "perfect" commander such that no human could compete, as that might kind of defeat the purpose and no one would want to play commander if their team couldn't be successful under human leadership. It would be like playing Warcraft or Starcraft on a hard setting, there the computer is always on top of everything and building stuff as fast as is computerly (not humanly) possible. People get distracted, forget to start building certain thing they'll need soon, etc, but the computer doesn't get distracted or forget... Maybe if the somehow analyzed the other team's human commander and kept the AI's rate of issuing commands at the same rate, or just a little bit slower, than that of the other team's human commander, then it might give the team that lacks a human commander a good fighting chance, but you'd usually be better off with a good human commander. Could work.

I don't mind rentable servers, as I know that there are plenty of people who wouldn't have the first clue on how to run a server, but when it comes to playing with friends, I like having a "home server" that has the rules that we like, the level of performance the we control, and will be online until WE decide we don't want to play the game anymore (not to mention good LAN server support).

Just to let you all know about Battlefield 2042. if you guys are on PC, and have the Nvidia app, you can force DLSS 4 for the game. Trust me, it looks 10x better than Native.. DLSS Quality used to look super low res, it looks far better. Almost like a remaster, colours everything, distance, sharpness is on a whole new LEVEL! i recommend you guys to do this asap and give it a go

Maybe when people play in the role of commander, data/stats on their performance would be gathered (actions per second, thanks received from squads, most frequently used asset, support/asset provided to squads, etc) and then AI could use that data to match that players style/skill level to give a team that doesn't have a human commander a roughly equal amount of support from their AI commander. (or maybe just need to realize that when no one steps in and provides leadership, things don't go as well, hehe).

In general, I agree with you, but since Kaossilator brought it up, I wonder "is there a way it might be able to work?" I'm not sure it could actually fly, but maybe if there was a special match mode where maybe your server runs 24/7 in normal model, but at 7PM on Tuesday and Thursday nights (or whatever schedule everyone agree to), the server reboots into multi-player campaign mode for an hour or two (again, whatever you configure) and then only people who signed up for the event (or maybe a person designated who gets invited for just a single night, by the missing person, or the commander, if some can't make it and they don't want to be down a team member) and then you progress through a series of maps over days/weeks as specified by whoever created the special campaign event. You'd play the same team through the event and use the same commander/squad leaders (unless people decide to promote/demote within their own, team, but it woudln't be random) and then you'd play through it like a choose your own adventure book, where, depending on who won a given map in the campaign, you move on to the next map in the campaign that makes sense (e.g. pushing deeper into one territory or another, so you could have different endings to the campaign, depending on the path take). I don't know that this could be the MAIN focus of a game, but if the game had good multi-player in general, so the server could be running "normal" all the time, but could have events scheuled at certain times, then that might work.

Come to think of it, Wolfenstein Enemy Territory had a campaign mode that moved through a certain series of related maps, but it didn't really have the single-player story line in a campaign like you're suggesting and it didn't matter who won, it still moved to the same map for the next map in the campaign.

There aren't any Battle Passes, but they're doing Event Passes now. The last Event Pass was in October, and in the in-game menu it says "Battle Pass Missions will be back soon" which is referring to another Event Pass.

Event Passes are only 30 tiers and are 500 BFC.

What helps with the hacking is that team engineers see an enemy aircraft on fire and think it's on the verge of dying, so they bring out their launchers.
