D. Portal and AoW are totally different codebases. AoW is entirely designed with matchmaking in mind...and has no support for browsing of its active servers

I suspect they moved over to a cloud based server system. Modern games break the lobby not due to SBMM like people imply, but due to modern server systems. They will only have as many servers as they need active at any time, closing servers when they are unused. Doing this requires a constant amount of players matchmaking.
A server browser could break such a system

AoW simply wasnt made to support its servers being browsed. Thats probably it. They'll probably mostly have engineers that are familiar with AOW codebase, then some who are with Portals (With assistance for Ripple Effect since they made Portal).

My question a long time ago, was why didnt they just abandon AOW once Portal supported all game modes and maps (Portal didnt support Breakthrough for a long time). Portal as far as I see it has everything AOW has, plus more.

But as you can see...Portal is superior in this functionality even. I do hope they add this to AOW.

I do still think it has some issues with AI/player backfilling tho. FNB modes/servers often have issues where real players stop being able to matchmake into active servers. So stuff like that is probably why we dont have more game modes with persistent servers/map rotations like TDM does.

Instead of assigning engineers to fix stuff like that, in order to give us map rotations/persistent servers for more core modes...it probably cheaper to keep it as is (Players return to lobby to matchmake for a new game after each round)...and ride things out til this game is no longer supported and they are onto the next game.

Not saying they are cheap either here...It just likely doesnt make sense to have a bunch of backend network engineers working on your old game...when systems need to be built for your new one.

It's called a serverless architecture. You don't need to perpetually host servers on the off-chance that a player might join, wasting resources. Instead, you make servers automatically depending on what a separate service like the matchmaking service requires. There are no servers until it's decided one is needed. When it's needed, hardware is automatically allocated from a pool likely shared with other systems to host the game.

I always associate the starter guns with being on the lower end of the effectiveness scale (not always true but it was just a weird hutch for me) so i never cared for this gun much

I liked using the aws cause I thought it looked the best

Sometimes it makes sense to restrict the better stuff to higher levels since you gotta give players something to look forward to unlocking if that makes sense, it kinda derived from there for me

Usually the starter guns are very "general" in their stats. the U100 is a bit of an odd ball in that sense

I can see why someone would think that, but it doesnt really make sense for them to do that. You dont want weapons to be outright better than eachother. The progression system in game mostly helps to stop choice paralysis by introducing weapons gradually (or to increase playtime)
