As part of launching the game through Steam and EA, it will call the EADesktop.exe process under C:/Program Files/Electronic Arts/EA Desktop/EA Desktop.
Except, this process apparently also makes network calls, which will fail by default due to the process never calling the Windows Defender Firewall to set up a firewall rule for it. This causes initial game launches to always fail to phone home (infinite seasonal loading screen), with subsequent launches working as expected due to the engine falling back to something that does work. This process of initial failure and subsequent success in launching the game repeats every time you restart the PC, however.
To fix the issue:
- Open the Control Panel, or search for and open it from the Settings app in Windows.
- Inside Control Panel, select Sort/View By, and set to Large or Small Icons. This will make finding things here easier.
- Open Windows Defender Firewall.
- In Windows Defender Firewall, click on Allow an App Through Windows Defender Firewall.
- Click Change Settings, and click Allow Another App.
- Click Browse. This will open a File Explorer dialogue.
- Navigate to the folder path mentioned above for EADesktop.exe, and open it. Click OK or whatever confirms the rule's creation.
You are done.

Portal died when the game got bad rep from terrible bugs, glitches and optimization issues to the extreme when it came out worse than even battlefield 4. It was lazily and hastily made. I remember insider information that due to the new devs the old engineers were trying to upgrade the engine and it took a year instead of 6 months then past game engine updates and ea wanted them to make a hero shooter like fortnite, with 128 players which took even more time to upgrade and then it was scrapped last minute into a year. Then in 2020 to 2021 covid hit and they had to move dev creation at home and the processing and security protocols made basic design and creation decisions twice as long then being in studio and um yeah. As part of launching the game through Steam and EA, it will call the EADesktop.exe process under C:/Program Files/Electronic Arts/EA Desktop/EA Desktop.
Except, this process apparently also makes network calls, which will fail by default due to the process never calling the Windows Defender Firewall to set up a firewall rule for it. This causes initial game launches to always fail to phone home (infinite seasonal loading screen), with subsequent launches working as expected due to the engine falling back to something that does work. This process of initial failure and subsequent success in launching the game repeats every time you restart the PC, however.
To fix the issue:
- Open the Control Panel, or search for and open it from the Settings app in Windows.
- Inside Control Panel, select Sort/View By, and set to Large or Small Icons. This will make finding things here easier.
- Open Windows Defender Firewall.
- In Windows Defender Firewall, click on Allow an App Through Windows Defender Firewall.
- Click Change Settings, and click Allow Another App.
- Click Browse. This will open a File Explorer dialogue.
- Navigate to the folder path mentioned above for EADesktop.exe, and open it. Click OK or whatever confirms the rule's creation.

I've tried reinstalling, restarting pc, closing overlays (steam, discord, etc). The latest Amd drivers are buggy with 2042 so I downloaded the driver from December, but it installs the drivers released in November >_> Sometimes the game can play for quite a while with no issues and other times it will crash with that error within 5 minutes.

being able to switch instantly from instant headshot sniper to full auto cheese maker would be a little busted
putting the capacitor types behind the plus menu makes it so you have to think a little about when you want to use each fire mode
