Hi everyone, new here.

I have played games on and off throughout my adult life but this year I put together a decent PC and have been playing more than I have in a very long time. You could say I am the definition of casual gamer. But I do love the idea of a competitive game and like to be challenged - so long as I am having fun.

While I have played FPS titles in the past, I am new to online multiplayer and the Battlefield franchise.

I picked up BF2042 on game pass a couple of weeks ago. I currently have about 70 hours logged and have progressed to level 50. I was absolutely blown away by the game at the start. The "discover conquest" matches where it pits you against a mix of new players and ai were fantastic. Challenging, but rewarding.

But once the "discover" option became unavailable...let's just say things have mostly gone downhill in terms of the fun aspect.

While I have been improving and at this point aquired the muscle memory for all of the controls, weapon modes etc, and I understand pretty much all of the mechanics, I am finding it incredibly hard to enjoy this game now because I am getting absolutely stomped on in almost every match. I sit consistently in the bottom 10 players in 128 player matches.

I'm sure this is a common complaint and one answer is to just persevere and get better. The problem is that getting into a flow state where that learning actually occurs, requires the game to be only just challenging enough. It is so hard to learn and get better at something when there are very few opportunities to get into any sort of a rhythm.

Every 1 in 10 matches or so, I will have a game where I manage to get a positive KD - while I can see I am getting lucky that the opposing side has a higher ratio of unskilled players, it feels like I am playing the game of my life and actually making a solid contribution to my team. My good decisions are actually rewarded despite my average reflexes, and overall I feel some genuine improvement in my overall skill because suddenly, I am on that much needed positive feedback loop. This is (in my opinion) how all games should aim to be, for players of all skill levels.

After a game like that it's straight back to the meat grinder for the next 10-20 matches, and I must say I am starting to lose patience with it now. It just isn't any fun, despite me knowing that the game has the potential to be tons of fun, if I could just get good enough at it.

I suppose I am here to ask for some advice from those who have been through this - what are my options?

I have played against the AI in solo matches and I can consistently hit 10+ KD against intermediate and win the match. Against the advanced AI my KD is of course a lot lower, however, I am ALWAYS the top performing player in the team, and my team ALWAYS loses. The whole thing just feels unbalanced and missing the human element.

At this point it feels like I need to pick up a game that is more friendly for beginners/with skill based matchmaking, and come back to BF2042 later? If so, can anyone recommend a game?

Or, are there are any community hosted matches for more low skilled/below average players to congregate and actually have fun and learn how to play?

On a side note, it really is quite ironic reading online about the complaints pro players have voiced about SBMM because they just want to be able to enjoy the game. Me too bro
