I mean the gunplay is very simple, there's not much spread at all, and there's certainly not a lot of recoil, plus you can actually control what little recoil there is properly since they fixed the bug. Any difficulty with the game people experience now is mostly actual aiming ability, which can't be helped unless the person trains or just plays more, or situational awareness, which does require genuine effort to learn and benefit from.

Do you ever get that annoying instinct when you're in the middle of an engagement and you're shooting one enemy when another one appears a bit more to the left/right and your hand automatically flicks to engage that target but you catch yourself doing so and stop mid-way so you're shooting at nothing and consequently die to their combined firepower?

Yeah in general as long as you are aligned with them vertically and between head - bottom of the torso that's the ideal spot. I tend to go for head level cause most players are standing but there are definitely instances where they'd be crouched, then you'll just have to adjust

Yeah primary slot shotguns are ridiculously useless, the secondary shotgun (Super 500) I think has a place but usually it doesn't cause enough damage to kill unless you're within 10 meters and have the crosshair/sights on center of mass.
