I think specialists would've worked better if, yes, they were the same as at launch, but we didn't get "characters" tied to roles, like instead of angel we'd have the "ammo support specialist" and he has the same traits as angel (okay maybe not armor), but you could customize him however you like, different faces and kit.

I do see TDM modes in Portal too with some regularity
