Think operators in R6 or heros in Overwatch. The difference in gameplay from character to character is MILES greater than character to character in 2042.

If you want to nitpick, sure, we can call it a hero shooter because there is technically a difference. But switching character to character in 2042 has effectively the same result as just swapping out the gadget on a class in an older title, so I would say the hero shooter-y-ness of 2042 is negligible.

personally the issues i have with 2042 have very little to do with the specialists, the most i can say about them is that they've caused a lot of balance problems for the game, namely Lis existing fucked up vehicle/infantry balance.

and also till the gadget restrictions happen, it's really difficult to actually tell who's got a launcher or whatever on the fly so you can't really prioritize targets like that if you're in a vehicle.
