I'm sorry, but making ww2 games force to have some reference to one battle is just dumb. It just means you can't use the majority of the war before 1944, cause some people that watched saving private ryan wants to have their omaha beach. Plus vanguard does refer to d-day anyway, since operation tonga was part of operation overlord where paratroopers jumped in the nights leading up to the beachlamding to secure artillery etc to make it safer for the troops lamding and securing key structures like bridges etc. Polina took place at stalingrad which was a battle during 42 amd 43, no reason to know about a future event and doesn't matter for soviets either as they pushed from east. Pilot guy was during midway, 1942, also no reason to know about d-day plus the people in pacific were more busy with the Japanese all the way to the end of the war. The north african theatre guy was at battle of elamein, 1942. Again, no use referring to a future event to liberate europe. Thry were busy keeping the germans off africa. The prologie and epilogue take place at the fall of germany and d-day Beach battles were already well done and gone.

you find a lot of quests along the way. so i wouldn't rely too much on fast travel. make sure to check the monster jobs board at every town for new quests etc. i'd highly recommend this mod https://www.nexusmods.com/witcher3/mods/943?tab=description it makes it so all the active quests are shown on the map, so you don't have to constantly switch quests to see which one is closest to you.
i don't recall having to grind those meaningless tasks to continue questing

As for the story, it sounds good but I haven't played the previous World of Assassination games and my only other experience with Hitman was the 2007 movie
If there's one thing I dislike about single player games, it's that they have a story arc that spans multiple titles
