from a ship technician NPC you can upgrade your ships existing components using a list of stuff, and hopefully everything works with your existing reactor etc
or you can modify the ship by adding/removing entire sections etc..so you should be able to have different cockpit designs and swap them around, but different vendors have different cosmetics/components in stock
