ON TOP OF the server issues, issues with account linking, some people buying the battlepass and then it getting taken away for some reason, and the incredibly time consuming experience of being a F2P player who didn't buy Overwatch, I can't see any reason why this game would be worth playing for anyone.

It's awful and it doesn't make any sense to do it this way. Prepaid and contract sims don't work any different, not in any significant fashion. The only reason I can think of that this would be a concern to Blizzard is if they wanted to guarantee that the phones being used weren't burners, and why would that matter if other ways of stopping alt account usage were possible? Selling the phone numbers to telemarketers and scammers.
