toxic wigeon
#

Why is no one talking about this?

#

It's super rude for Microsoft to push for a hardware update essentially when they're phasing out W10.

#

There's a difference between the future is now and that.

cursive marten
#

i mean plenty of people are talking about it

#

Microsoft clearly does not give a shit however so what do you expect anyone else to do.

pale quartz
#

they can not enforce it and the main reason it's done, malware, can infect users easier, or they can like they should have done way before windows 11

cursive marten
#

well i mean the solution is for AC devs to stop being such fucking dicks to linux users already but they're not going to do that

pale quartz
#

what do you expect them to do

#

Linux does not have a secure enclave

#

they can run in user mode and it's more or less not an anticheat anymore, which defeats the purpose

cursive marten
#

this is why i feel like relying on developer hosted servers, matchmaking, an not actually moderating servers are all a series of mistakes that have resulted in cheating being the way it is.

toxic wigeon
#

We might finally get a Linux build that can support kernel(?(

#

Who knows

pale quartz
#

where lol because nobody is making that

#

to be quite frank if you're using hardware which is so old to not have basic support for things such as tpm you have a responsibility as a user to be aware of your own security because at that point you're already compromised, hardware doesnt last forever and Microsoft should have done it for windows 10, nevermind 11, it's way past the point of forgiving

#

apple are way ahead in this department with mandatory forced encryption for boot that can't be switched off but people are for some reason complaining when Microsoft is doing the bare minimum

#

TPM provides secondary benefits such as the inability to spoof hardware IDs, so you can't have it both ways with anticheats enforcing security and allowing users to have it off

cursive marten
#

for some reason
are you blind or are you stupid

pale quartz
#

not blind to anything

cursive marten
#

are you sure about that

toxic wigeon
#

I'm not gonna approach this by being a dick.
You know as well as I that windows is used by a very large number of users.

pale quartz
#

yeah and those users are who those target

#

if you think a normal user has any concept about tpm then you're missing the point, these changes are beneficial for normal users

toxic wigeon
#

Oh yeah I'm aware. No one cares about features people just want the OS.

pale quartz
#

they would be complaining if their 3rd gen intel processor was compromised in the same capacity, so there's no win win scenario

#

yes it's not convenient that old hardware gets scrapped but that's how it goes

toxic wigeon
#

I understand that too. I do wish there would be greater awareness of Linux and shit even if it meant it gave something for people to use.

#

Yeah

#

It's damned if you do damned if you don't.

#

This is purely a processor thing though yeah?

pale quartz
#

motherboard thing

toxic wigeon
#

Oh that makes sense

pale quartz
#

CPUs hold the TPM keys, TPM modules themselves are embedded on a motherboard

toxic wigeon
#

Side note i just wish w11 wasn't full of crap so I wouldn't feel so bad for using it.

#

Like the one drive crap.

pale quartz
#

the quality assurance has gotten quite bad over the last year for it, OneDrive etc are just your usual corpo stuff

toxic wigeon
#

Nvm updates re enabling things.

pale quartz
#

regarding the secure enclave it's not happening anytime soon, the closest is valve and they have no plans or developments for anything of the sort for their distro

toxic wigeon
#

First thing I literally went ahead when I got my system was use your one drive uninstaller.

#

Last time I tried to do that on my system manually without it it didn't work.

#

Does a Windows cleaner exists?

pale quartz
#

the registry keys change per update, so old scripts don't work etc

#

the one I done is quite old so not surprised

toxic wigeon
#

Oh yeah i was gonna say shit changes places and scripts won't work as well.

#

Oh nah wait I'll reword it. When I got w11 way back at June, I tried to manually get rid of one drive but that didn't work which is why i asked you much later. It still works thankfully.

pale quartz
#

ah gotcha

#

just the ecosystem of software that future proofing is kinda impossible, they normally stop working within a year or two to most degrees

small zinc
#

He can still install windows 11 on an i3 6100

#

the end.

#

Question asked and answered.

toxic wigeon
#

That convo ended dude and you're still on it. Move on.

pale quartz
#

@toxic wigeon lmk if it doesn't work eventually I've not ran it in a while, probably will fry sooner or later

toxic wigeon
#

Yeah I'll let you know!

small zinc
#

pale quartz
#

in other news it's exactly what I said it was

toxic wigeon
#

Oh wow.

#

Oh fuck what's a good thing for monitoring cpu temps again? Afterburner doesn't see my 9800x3d

#

@pale quartz

pale quartz
#

uh you can use hwinfo64

toxic wigeon
#

Perfect. Thank you.

pale quartz
#

afterburners probably not been updated

#

np

toxic wigeon
#

Aren't the devs underpayed or some shit?

pale quartz
#

nah the developers for it are based in Russia and there was a whole situation where they weren't getting the contracted rate by MSI due to sanctions, that was a while ago it's probably just not been updated for compatibility

toxic wigeon
#

Oh yeah i remembered that part. Unfortunately I was thinking of it being a situation like with wilde

pale quartz
#

nah nothing like that it's a independent albeit contracted piece of software

#

outsourced ig is the correct term

toxic wigeon
#

Should I look at getting a faster ssd by the way? Or should I wait for that much later?

pale quartz
#

well which one have you got

toxic wigeon
#

My ssd does its job just a matter of going to buy a second ssd should it be faster or a duplicate.

#

980 2 tera pro for its boot

pale quartz
#

980 pro is fine unless you've got a PCIe 5 board it doesn't make that much sense, ig if you're considering it you can do so (or planning an upgrade as Blackwell is PCIe 5) but depends what your plans are

toxic wigeon
#

Yeah fair.

pale quartz
#

mostly depends on the price of whatever drive you're considering

toxic wigeon
#

It's not a priority just a thought

pale quartz
#

yeah I mean the one you've got is fine don't see much reason to switch over

#

the only reason I got the gen 5 4tb was cause it was cheap

#

I'll probably retire my sabrent drive eventually saying that

toxic wigeon
#

I'm not regretting it but I wish I put a little more thought into the motherboard cause gen 5 would have been a good one to go for. But oh well, I can just take advantage of gen 6 in a few years time. CursedCat

pale quartz
#

they've also got insane chipset power draw so you pick your poison

toxic wigeon
#

Pretty much.

#

Gen 4 should last quite a while anyways.

pale quartz
#

yeah no reason it won't

#

main "bottleneck" for drives are the amount of lanes they have rather than the advertised bandwidth at this point anyways

molten flame
#

7950X3D had only 120W TDP and freqeuncy/voltage limits, meanwhile 9950X3D is 170W TDP and has no limits whatsoever

#

curious about overclocking capability

pale quartz
#

going to be pointless

molten flame
#

lol

pale quartz
#

similar to the 9800x3d it's bound by memory

molten flame
#

cache doesn't care much about clocks right

pale quartz
#

it does just there's nothing to gain to a degree that matters

#

the performance is CL/frequency bound rather than core clocks

molten flame
#

Zen 6 better have new I/O

pale quartz
#

no idea on if medusa has a reworked IOD as of now

molten flame
#

imagine if they did it again

pale quartz
#

who knows, for now assume it's not on AM5 platform wise though

molten flame
#

DDR6 is likely

#

maybe they do AM5 with DDR6 slots keanu

pale quartz
#

uh yeah would never happen

#

you'd need cross compatibility with DDR5 because of the chipset

brave sundial
#

LUL just not the full 11 experience though

#

But hey, atleast it's something

pale quartz
#

the support document just highlights what happens if you do, there's no instructions to do so, the pc world article was wrong and those instructions were always there

#

unless you're referring to LTSC home/pro there's no sanctioned way to

brave sundial
#

oh, you mean the articles that stated they allowed for updates without the module but without any OTAs afterwards?

pale quartz
#

yeah

#

that article source didn't exist

brave sundial
#

Oh haHAA

pale quartz
#

the author cited fake info the support doc never gave any such info

#

and warning on what happens has been there since it launched, isn't anything new, just the usual tech reporting nonsense

#

other than the 30-40% performance drop it's a awful idea because your updates will eventually break in addition

brave sundial
#

The taskbar control centre it great and they finally added the calender back from w10, my only gripe

brave sundial
#

Instead claiming that they just won't allow for OTAs

pale quartz

if you're buying a 5090 you care about 1 of two things;
1; running games at max detail for 4k
2: wanting to do some pseudo-AI tasks which it itself isnt that particularly great at like deep learning because it's vram is tiny compared to what you require for that

it'll be the best card in the consumer discrete space for gaming, so it's the best "good" you can buy

small zinc
# pale quartz the card isn't targeted towards gamers

You're sorely mistaken if you don't think it's not "targeted" for gamers. There's a reason they put GeForce on the box. You don't think Titan was the same way? Was never meant to be a gaming GPU, but Jensen knew what he was doing. Once he slapped Geforce GTX on the box, it became a gamer GPU instead of a high compute GPU.

4090 at 1.01%
7900XTX at 0.44%
RX 6800 at 0.22%

All those AMD cards together account for less users than are running 4090s...the halo product from Nvidia

pale quartz
#

the xtx was about half what a 4090 cost at launch aswell

4090 is positioned as "The best consumer card money can buy". that encompases gaming, AI, compute, encoding, ETC. Its not especially targetting "Gamers", it just is the best gaming card.

I'm sad that the XTX was just plagued by annoying drivers.

#

Its a good card on paper but goddamn.

pale quartz
#

its defects are on a architecture level

#

the drivers were just a mess at launch

small zinc
#

The point is. "Gamers" want the best money can buy. Does that mean every consumer? Obviously not. Not everyone can afford a $2,000+ GPU. But those who can want the best. In teh case of Ada, the 4090 was the only GPU worth a damn in the entire Ada lineup. The 4080 and below simply didn't make sense price wise. Anyone who knows a shred about PC hardware knows that and bought the 4090. Nvidia purposely gimps the lesser SKU's and still charges a premium for them when they match previous generation performance at best. The 90 series is absolutely targeted at gamers with the cash for them after Nvidia did away with Titan branding.

i just got an update to the nvidia controlpanel from the microsoft store app. i thought stuff like that were updated from new nvidia drivers. is this normal

dry pike

Drivers don't install anything, they are the thing being installed, like being installed from software like the Nvidia app.

Since the new Nvidia app is a Windows store app it will automatically be updated from there

ivory creek

ye but usually u get stuff from the software you download from nvidias webpage

not microsoft store

dry pike

The previous software could update itself, this new one is not different.

But yes, downloading the driver from the Nvidia website can also be used to update the software. But since the Nvidia app updates itself and the driver there's no need.

ivory creek
#

i dont use nvidia app since they doesnt seem to have their default filters and settings under controll which can cause performance loss

Just disable filters? Takes like 2 seconds. Also, the latest default settings for the app has it off by default.

They were not meant to be performance draining when no filter is activated. That's a bug.

Apple wearables do generally have a superior screen, faster response time, better scroll rate, better sleep tracking, superior hardware internals, an OS built from the ground up over a stripped version of Android. and I do prefer Apple Music over Spotify. Hyperthreating (HT) and Simultaneous Multi-Threading (SMT) are equivilant technologies from Intel and AMD. Multithreading is the programing of apps to work synchronously across multiple CPU cores/threads

willow schooner
# molten flame

Read the expanded explanation and stop using google as your brain

dry pike
#

Hyperthreading makes one physical processor act like two virtual processors, while multithreading runs multiple tasks (threads) within a single program at the same time. So, hyperthreading is good at multithreading, but it's not the same.

willow schooner
#

And Arrow lake lacks this

molten flame
willow schooner
#

HT is a form of SMT.

molten flame
#

threads aren't any physical part of the chip at all, entirely just a virtual thing

willow schooner
dry pike
#

The point to note is the "Simultaneous" part of SMT. That's what makes the term comparable with hyperthreading. Remove that and leave the multithreading and they are not comparable.

molten flame
#

AMD used to have a different form of SMT called CMT for Bulldozer CPUs

willow schooner
#

It was more like they had to, due to that architectures design

#

But effectively, yeah. they did

#

Man I remember swapping from a 3770k to an 8350, what a n00b I was back then. Instantly went back to the 3770k haha

molten flame
#

HT going away on Intel was mostly because of efficiency

willow schooner
#

Not at all, its because they couldnt get the scheduling to work on arrow lake

molten flame
#

HT on Intel causes up to 30% increase in power draw

willow schooner
#

You think intel care about 30% extra power for 15-20% faster MT?

molten flame
#

Ryzen is much more efficient with SMT hence why they kept SMT on Zen 4c and Zen5c

willow schooner
#

I feel like you are quoting this from wiki articles haha

molten flame
#

not at all

#

it's common knowledge that Intel got rid of HT for efficiency, since E-cores are better in terms of PPW

willow schooner
#

Even Pat G himself said they needed to disable HT on arrow lake due to architecxture deficiencies, and issues getting the scheduling to work on non monolithic dies

#

Efficiency gains are a pure bi-product of that disabling. Dont believe everythign you read on the internet. That efficiency thing is pure marketting spin

#

sure its true, but its not why HT was disabled

That's what they're working on for the 50 series right?

Oh yeah neural rendering

Add 4-8GB memory, support of yet another non-retroactively supported DLSS version and assisting tech, slight performance boost, increase price, call it a day

Well no because I haven't bought a 4090 or even a 4080. The reason I mentioned it is because the 4090 outperforms everything of course as it should but it also has a ton of features I feel like aren't even nessacary. Like tbh a 4090 in csgo would be stupid overkill. I don't even need 600 fps Ina game like that. My point is the 40 series just came out. Pushing the next series is crazy

Previous cards too good so they release new tech which the old cards don't have so people get fomo and buy the new cards anyway.

for the video Steve tests with rebar on, BMG/arc architecture is more or less built to require rebar so if you switch it off performance will dive off a cliff

performance regressions are like 30% on arc with rebar off

I wonder wil NV invest more in rebar related optimizations. A lot of games still are not whitelisted for it to do anything
