Incendiary rounds don't really have any drawback, I personally use them to harass enemy planes and have even shot a few down. Otherwise, spec to reduce recoil if you can.

MMGs are all about positioning. Sure, you're going to have an easy time proning in one corner the whole game, but you're not really gonna get a whole lot done, nor are you going to get a ton of kills. The best thing you can do is really make use of cover. Peek over low walls and bipod, let loose a few long bursts, then move up. The MG-42 in particular can be useful in close quarters if need be using the hipfire, but ideally bipod from low cover at medium-close range.

MMGs are also defensively oriented, so if you're defending, its not an awful idea to set up in a window or behind a low wall as a nest, fire at enemies for a while, then reposition if things get a little hot
