for the record, WW1 wasnt still. The frontline didnt move because ground was quickly recaptured, but on BF's scale you would see movement

True. But as far as map design goes the ruined landscapes of BF1 are kinda to be expected. The mobile combat of WW2 meant fighting tended to happen in relatively pristine areas barring months long sieges of cities where it would be slowly turned to rubble.

Not really. I wouldn’t expect to be fighting in rubble outside of like Berlin or Stalingrad or Warsaw, for example.

Small rural towns like Arras? Totally within the tone of the game to be pristine.

If we had gotten an Eastern Front expansion, there’d have certainly been more pre-ruined maps. Bagration opened with the largest artillery salvo in history, and almost every city and town in the western USSR was either razed or reduced to rubble in some way.

You can have both. But its all about getting the player immersed in the setting. Simply being accurate is not enough. When a map has bright buildings in great condition and perfect weather, than it doesnt feel like a warzone but a tourist spot. I think the destruction fails to fade the beauty of map instead they just contrast with eachother

You don’t, but for the small areas battlefield maps cover it’s typically pretty pointless outside of things where the map is one small part of a larger battle.

Like the pre-landing bombardment of Iwo Jima, for example.

DICE tends to veer towards maximizing potential destruction with Frostbite if they can. If it looks like it could be destroyed by the player, DICE tends to allow it rather than making a pre-ruined model.

And even then, we see them do it in cases where it makes sense like Narvik
