MMG's are a "new" thing to the BF franchise, BFV was the first game to restrict certain weapons to hipfire-only when not bipodded as far as I know. Previously, any weapon could be aimed from the shoulder while standing.

The purpose for this was to allow those weapons to be more powerful, while restricting their mobility as a downside. Firepower, but at the cost of mobility and versatility
This allows weapons like the MG-42 to be insanely powerful without them breaking the game entirely.

I think MMG's requiring a bipod is a good thing, it creates a bit of diversity and also allows for more powerful weapons. However, I think hipfiring should be a bit more viable. Right now, its sort of an uncontrollable spray. I think theres something to be said for allowing some accuracy from the hip, maybe a fair accurate stream thats just incredibly difficult to control effectively.

Thats one of the somewhat intended downsides. You have firepower, but you have to be set up well to make use of it. This makes MMG's a more defensively oriented weapon, and they excel at it.

I'm mixed on that one. BF is a casual shooter first and foremost, so theres something to be said in favor of 3D spotting, but at the same time I really enjoyed the more "hardcore" esque feeling of BFV's spotting mechanics. Maybe to build off tree's point, maybe allow spotting of vehicles, but no easy spotting of infantry? Not sure on this one.
