You generally want to stick with the engagement range that the LMG you're using is good at. Generally it's like 20 meters or so and farther. 3x scopes are pretty damn good with low recoil LMGs like the Bren, Type 97, and Type 99.
Close range LMGs include the BAR and FG-42. The BAR especially is quite versatile because you can switch between high rate of fire for CQB, or low rate of fire for ranged combat.
