If you are new to the franchise, just go with the newest game IMO. You don't have to deal with the server browser in BF5 for example, you just select a mode to play and matchmaking puts you into a squad and a match.
Talking from experience on PS4.
Things might be different on other platforms of course.
Also, I wouldn't say there is a "best" BF game. For example I like some things in 4 that are not present in 5 and vice versa.
You should also consider the theme of the games. BF5 takes place in WW2, BF1 in WW1 and BF3/4 are set in the modern world.
Again, a warning though: The older games have a much smaller playerbase and it is usually people with max rank and everything unlocked who are quite good at the game.

For example in BF4 PS4 the only two still active modes are Conquest large and Team deathmatch.

Haven't played in months but the last time I played, servers were pretty scarce. If you're lucky, you'll find more tons of NA servers all full, play on PS4 or 5 if you're looking for NA lol
