Trench only provides cover, you can't shoot out from it in most spots but the few that leave you quite exposed

If you actually want to fire back, trench might not be the best option, unless you follow it to one of the small bunkers

Whatever gun you're using, the dropoff system is just overturned to shit. You'll shoot someone at 100-120 meters with an assault rifle and hit multiple headshots on them and you still only have done a grand total of 50 damage. Underwhelming at best.
