Pre-orders made some sense a long time ago. Games were sold physically, and stores would run out of copies on day one. If you didn't pre-order, you might have to wait to get the game. And since games weren't updated over the internet, there was no incentive to wait, other than lower prices if you waited a long time. I still don't think these were great reasons to pre-order, but I could understand a little.

Nowadays, there is no point. There's no limit to number of copies that can be downloaded. Games actually get better after updates and the price still goes down, so there's more incentive than ever to wait. The best case is usually something like a skin you'll use for 2 weeks until you inevitably get a different one you like better. The worst case is a game that's virtually unplayable or that you dislike at launch, like BF4 & 2042. Just like before, you're putting up money before you know the value of the product. There's no sense in it.
