Surfels is a quite cheap way to do RayTracing. That allows them to have RT GI and Reflections even on base consoles like PS5. The game gets a lot of hate for the bugs and the LOD and all of that but honestly I think it's quite an achievement what they did especially on their own tech.

- WaveActiveAnyTrue() branching is dogshit
- DeformedPushConstants_m0[4].y is a per drawcall push constant with no temporal smoothing so any time something changes e.g their abysmal pop in you get massive terraforming

Half res tile structure so it snaps badly
Warping
- Flat bias in ReconstructBehindMaterialsCS, so even terrain that should be 'flat' stll gets forced height. When two or more materials both have the same height its ggs when they merge
- BackgroundTilePS decodes packed normals → bilinearly blends them → re-encodes. ReconstructBehindMaterialsCS decodes them again → blends → re-encodes. (slop on slop on slop that ruins quality each step of the way)
- Projection formula mismatch

So as the camera moves, say a grass pixel snaps from a highres cascade to the terrain shadow map

The reason development took 7 years is that they basically overhauled the engine every single year to optimize performance and push more polygons. For example, while most engines optimize through culling (simply not rendering what's unseen), the BlackSpace engine (it had a different name when I was there) actually deletes the vertices. They also try new methods to shift tasks typically handled by the CPU over to the GPU.
