#Red Dead Redemption 2

That's why I use IGD and I don't run max at 4k so it's reasonable
do you guys use RenoDX in combination with Special K ? I'm trying to but renodx sliders don't do anything. (seem to work well without SK)
It's viable in that case
I've only got RenoDX
easy way ^^
I'm running the game with DLAA 4k on average 90/100 FPS all on
just in Saint Denis I drop below 80
IGL use 1.5
highest settings? which GPU
5090
That makes sense lol. I've got a 5080 and there's a couple spots where the FPS will drop just below 60 on max settings on 4K with DLSS Quality Mode
I'm in Chapter 2 now. I wonder about the instant day/night thing
u downloaded extreme?
Extreme what? I'm only using RenoDX
ILD
I'm only using RenoDX
reno mod is ok to use ? render are greatly better than vanilla hdr ? where i can find download link ?
RenoDX is a HDR mod that looks way better than vanilla HDR
It became night so quick LMAO why is it like this
i asked because i've seen he is on work statut, thank you man
Is there really nothing that can be done about the day/night transition in DX12 RDR2?
" may not work with motion blur off " i hate motion blur...
longer day on nexus mod ?
RenoDX only works on DX12 RDR2. For some reason thye day/night transition on DX12 is almost instant which isn't the case on the Vulkan verison
I don't know if any mod changes this
I think thatās a bug related to DLSS
so if i've play with fsr and dx12, i've the right day night transition ?
Maybe, idk. Try it and find out. Iāve always got the transition bug even with TAA on DX12
For real?
I don't mind because RenoDX looks too good lol
and if you try optiscaler ? got the FSR4 instead DLSS
DLSS looks better though š
I think enabling OverrideAutoExposure fixes some lighting issues in RDR2
Can be done with dlsstweaks
Which lightning issues do you mean?
For instance in dark scenes you can get intense ghosting when moving your camera fast, or during thunderstorms at night, or in tunnels where there's a light at the end of it
I don't remember all the bugs because I only really used it in the DLSS 3 days but it was also necessary with a lighting mod I used at the time
Most of it happened in dark scenes
Are you using some kind of frame generation mod?
Is there a DLSS Frame Generation mod by the way?
No just with DLSS itself, I never used frame gen in RDR2
Let me check if I get the same thing, are you using RenoDX as well?
I'm not playing the game myself at the moment, it's from past experience. Just hoping it might solve some of those DLSS issues people are having
Yeah I found it could be easily recreated on my system in the prologue missions where you find john on the mountain and go hunting with charles.
I personally don't get ghosting at all, didn't get it in the prologue either. I played it today
I did go into a tunnel at night and it looked weird as hell, the end of the tunnel looked like a magical portal
But no ghosting
I think it does cause more issues than ghosting

This is 3.8 but it might still suffer from the same issues
Is this still relevant with DLSS 4.5? I'm gonna check if these issues are still present tomorrow
I would think some of the issues are still present. I can't confirm, also the last time I booted up RDR2 was on DLSS3. Will have to check myself too tomorrow if I can
Also im not sure how the dlsstweaks method is done anymore, whether you still have to actually replace the DLL file in order to use it or not
I can see shadows popping in and out of existence on the sides of my screen, I don't even have an ultrawide monitor. Is there a fix for this?
I believe 4.5 has auto exposure on by default
I was finally able to get RDR2 with direct X12 work!!
Had to do a clean install to verify if it was a pc issue or mod issue.
Funny thing, the rampage trainer did cause the issue, it crashed (1st mod added) and at the moment of removing it the game launched again.
Does anyone have the mod added? Maybe its the version or idk
works fine with rampage trainer
Weird, gonna try to add it again, one sec
Do you guys use scripthook v2 or the og one?
Okay its stable without any mods so issue must be one of the ones I have. So, the settings default are good to go? I just changed peak brightness to 800 as per lgc4 and nothing else
So the issue isnt direct x bro, the issue are the mods itself, due to the asi and dll conflicting
Well, F for reno at the moment. Sadly there was no way for me to load it with mods and I have some that require the asi, so I tried this and so far it actuall it's pretty good. The mod I downloaded crushed a little bit the blacks imo, this one does seem to do a better job. Let's hope for a port of reno on vulkan on the future
I gave up on Rockstar games regarding the hdr. I always seem to stumble on some glitch. Only other game i dont use renodx is Indiana Jones and the only reason for that it is not compatible with frame gen and i need those frames. Everything else works flawlesly for me.
If I want to play a game without HDR is turning HDR off in Windows all I have to do?
Yes you should disable it. I dont ever use Hdr outside games or movies. Windows Hdr experience simply sucks for me.
Is there something like the Windows HDR calibration that you need to do with SDR as well?
And do any of you know which ''Game visual'' mode is best on Asus monitors?
With HDR on you can't change this setting but with HDR off it is possible
I use default settings. I only enabled 10bit and full range in nvidia control panel. All other settings i set on my monitor. I dont have calibration tool but i always calibrate my monitors using Lagom.nl Lcd monitor test images. I use it for Sdr and Hdr. In hdr i use calibration tool according to my monitor specs and also adjust monitor settings accroding to lagom.nl images. Also i have reference images on my pc that i calibrate to.
I have xg27aqdmg. I use console mode adjustable hdr 100 brightness and 95 contrast 95 cause it prevents color clipping for me. Uniform brightness off. In sdr i use wide gamut brightness 100 contrast 75 also to avoid clipping. Gamma 2.2.
I enabled full range as well, my monitor is 12bpc though
I just loaded up RDR2 without HDR and it's insane how good it still looks on max settings without any HDR on a 4K OLED
I have rampage and no crashing
Yea, idk why but adding mods results on crashing no matter what if I have reno. Idk if its scripthook v2 or mods itself but yea no working
Im using the lilium black foor fix thingy on vulkan and verifying about the saturation slider, tho cloud mentioned 30 was the sweetspot the default is 75? So idk if was a lower it mentioned
Yeah reshade and that stuff shouldnāt affect mods
Most likely u just have the wrong script hook or something
I have Lennyās mod loader and asi loader and scripthook rdr2
I use v2 and the ultimate asi loader so idk
Are u getting scripthook from here
Still its true that directx goes with a rlly soft stutter and it crashes if I disable triple buffering for, some reason
And this is the asi loader
https://www.rdr2mods.com/downloads/rdr2/tools/9-rdr-2-asi-loader/
A simple ASI Loader for Red Dead Redemption 2 to easily load your custom code into the game. Files are loaded after Arxan has finished its decryption stage so you can search for your favorite patterns right away! Installation Put version.dll in your game root folder. When the game launches, you s...
Oh so thats the OG one
Thatās the one I use
Interesting. Has your game worked so far and do you have any other mods?
Asis that are not ultimate then to fck a little bit the game and mods
Rampage should be fine tho
Ya Iāve got asi mods like Stashmylantern and 10 LML mods like whyems visuals and stuff
Works fine
What mods do you think wonāt work? I dont think āultimateā asi loader is needed
The ultimate asi loader GitHub is generic for most games but itās way easier to just download the specific rdr2 version cuz then itās guaranteed to work
Some mods give crashes due to asi not loading correctly tho I dont have that much mods. Mostly they are related to catalogue improvements since I cant stand John Morgan
Back at set up I had a lot of crashes, tho is true I was trying to run with some texture mods (even the compressed oned) they gave nothing but issues do I removed them
So you get crashes when using the asi loader i sent? Or do you just assume youāll get crashes
And yes texture mods will always cause issues with Vulkan, if you have more than 1
I only use TTO and I have 0 issues
You canāt combine multiple texture mods tho, it breaks the game
Nah, that one Im not sure, never saw then
I used 3 different ones and the god one and recommended by peiple on nexus is ultimate
The one thst comes with v2 is broken
Tho Im thinking the crashes is not the asi loader
But v2
OG may be the solution for reno and mods
Tbh I am already a little tired of trying so for now I think Ill stick with black foor fix and hdr saturation
Ya like u prolly just have too many mods or something is conflicting
I still prefer Vulkan over dx
Maybe ye
What does this do?
its for loading ASI mods?
Has someone take a look to this? Maybe not ideal for gameplay but could actaully be ideal for a vulkan version of Reno
bro im not playing at non native resolution š
as I said
not for normal gameplay but for the reno develop
part of the issue of trying a reno on vulkan is everytime an alt tab is done game switches to borderless which breaks hdr
that could help the develop of reno on vulkan so once it's ready it can be used on normal res
ah i thought u just meant itd help players use reno on vulkan lol, i didnt see during dev mentioned
but i think thats just one of the obstacles to a vulkan renodx for rdr2, i think musa said there just isnt really a vulkan decomp that works with the game
f
you can mod tf put kf the game with reno just missing admittedly some great one
terrain texture overhaul and most of the gun mods crash
So does Borderless in fact break HDR? I mean, I have DX12 Full Screen, I alt tab, come back and the game is now in Borderless. But I can still change stuff in Reno, I can see the difference. Is the HDR messed up when Borderless in DX12?
Or does it happen only in Vulkan?
only vulkan
got it, thanks!
Is there a RenoDX Discord similar to this one for Fallout 76? I'm unable to find it but there is a RenoDX mod for the game
ill make a page
made the mod before the renodx discord

Thank you ā¤ļø
I have systematic crashes on start up (ERR_GFX_D3D_DEFERRED_MEM) with d3d12.dll (Reshade) in place (with or without reno addon present).
I see I'm not the only one, if anyone found a solution please share (I tried to clean dx shader cache but it's not that).
Turns out it was because of my RTSS overlay activated during startup! If I don't display it the game will launch without issue! Happy to enjoy a reno once again.. huge bump in image quality with this one!
Not related to reno as I also have this issue with preset set to off, but would anyone here know what this strange "grid effect" comes of?
perhaps some dithering in the AO or dlss artifacts
It was indeed a dlss issue. After upgrading to the latest dll with dlsstweaks (and forcing DLAA while at it) I don't have this issue anymore

does this actually worked? my game looks absolutely borked
Yes it works, that's not how its supposed to look lol
Are you using windows auto HDR or something?
I figured out what it was it didn't like the overhaul mod I was using I can't see the renodx menu on DX12 for some reason though
Its here on your tabs
it's huge, but I can only run like one texture mod. I think the games textures are largely fine though. Hoping one day the renodx vulkan evolves to include the ability to decompile this game
Indeed! I haven't really started my run (still on the nexus installing tons of mods š )
I wanted to install this one Terrain Textures Overhaul - TTO, but it only works with Vulkan (if I understood correctly, RDR2 DX12 can't handle too well high res textures).
@flint crater by any chance would there be a way to have your reno addon work with Vulkan? I have no idea what it can represent of if this is even doable, but... I'm asking š
Works with DX12 for me
TTO? I haven't tried because the mod page says it doesn't, and some commentaries too. Did you do anything special to make it work?
It was originally a DX12 mod no?
Nope, it's a mod saying litteraly "USE VULKAN, this doesn't work on dx12"
So you really have it working with dx12?
I'm at the moment downloading the 20GB textures, will try it myself anyway
I wouldn't use TTO, and be careful with texture upscales or overhauls in general. It breaks ped spawns. The game engine can't handle those bloated textures, and while you might not notice at first, you'll eventually see empty trains, less animals etc. I wouldn't use DX12 on rdr2 either, just ends up causing more issues than it's worth... I run the game with around 80 mods - i'd suggest sticking with catalogue improvements, gunslinger improvements (CI merge), Artie & John QoL, and Character Texture Overhaul, as it uses a newer method the game engine can handle
TTO Mod author saying itās not subject to spawning issue but I donāt know if thatās true.
So far I havenāt installed textures mods except CI/GI.
Thanks for the list Iāll have a look at Artie & John QOL and CTO!
I also have PDO and Dynamic Seasons/Winter/Autumn (these are not texture mods so I should be fine with the spawning issue hopefully)
QoL is incompatible with CI and GI, and already accomplishes the same thing
character texture overhaul is AI slop and downgrades the game's textures, while increasing the chance of causing spawn issues, made a post about it here https://www.nexusmods.com/reddeadredemption2/images/7800
Oh hi! I don't know how I found it (reddit, here, nexus...) but I came across your google docs guide, thank a lot for it! I built my mod list based on your recommandations š
ok, maybe I'll stay away from QOL and CTO then
OK so far with TTO "main preview build" (link in commentaries) and TTO south I don't have issues starting the game. But as I'm still at the start of the game in the snow area, I don't know, maybe it will crash the game when it needs to load areas concerned by the texture overhaul. We'll see
It says it causes crashes with it
But it still has a visual impact
I didn't get crashes when using it so not sure
@teal pawn what are your thoughts about TTO, if any?
the work put into it is phenomenal, the author used manual work to recreate most, if not all the textures
but i still don't use the mod, unfortunately the author was hellbent on not making low LOD textures for it, so there is a chance it can cause spawn issues
me and another modder tried convincing him of doing it, but he wouldnt relent
not saying it will cause spawn issues btw, just that it might increase the likelihood of it happening
i can't recall if the textures are using the correct dds compression formats, but i believe they are
so there's that at least
because of this, it also increases vram usage a bit
QOL is safe to use
Thanks for your feedback. Regarding spawning issue, is there a way to check if one's plagued with it? I wouldn't like to have a big part of my playthrough with a poor wild life and other missing stuff I won't really notice until I see an empty tram (I don't remember my 1st run back in 2018)
A way "at the beginning of a new game"
unfortunately not, especially not in chapter 1
Check trains at valentine
a lot of people have been obsessing over it, like counting amount of chickens in certain areas or whatever, because it's not like a simple checkbox that gets ticked in the code to stop spawning assets
it's a gradual thing, its kind of like a safe code in the engine to limit spawns once you start reaching a certain amount memory usage (which i don't believe we can really measure for sure)
and it varies for everyone, obviously depending on the amount of mods they have installed, but also in which mods they have installed, and what hardware they're running the game on
No it doesnāt. Thatās only if you stack multiple texture mods. TTO on its own is totally fine
i can for sure say its definitely not something you should be worrying about if you're not running a gazillion uncompressed mods
New megamod on nexus trending page by dominator claims to fix dx12
Fix what about dx12 tho
Its ambiguous. The description was written using translate and it just seems very convoluted
just took a look, seems incredibly sus
here's the two cents of another modder
Yeah that's what I expected tbf. But most users on nexus seem to be eating it up
that's unfortunately incredibly common
you could upload a 20 gb file that is literally just vanilla textures repackaged and there would be 20k downloads and people would be praising you
He at least has his comments opened š
I'm just waiting for some fuckass games journalist to write some article on the next hotness
File big so surely mod good amirite?
it genuinely hurts seeing mods like these explode in popularity instead of other real mods getting attention š
character texture overhaul getting that many downloads and endorsements still blows me away
Instanity is a hack
absolutely lmao
Red dead modding scene suffers from a lot of the good shit being private or discord exclusives
So coverage is never gonna be great
whats private and exclusive
LOL I've sent a message to someone regarding one of his comments about DX12 and textures, because I wanted some leads about that in order to see what could be done because I really wanted to stay with dx12 (for reno and the better perfs) and still enjoy texture enhancements... Turns out this someone was dominator š
A lot of the epilogue John stuff is still private. I think that's what started the precedent of private and exclusive shit. Everyone was racing to be the best epilogue John mod
I think there was drama amongst Devs working as a team, team breaking up etc
i was part of that team š
To the question "do you have some insights regarding making a texture mod compatible with dx12", the answer is :
If you're looking for a texture mod that supports DX12, I can point you to only one: MY mod. There is no other mod in the world that supports DX12. As for how it's doneāit requires using custom scripts and professional-grade conversion software. Standard GUI-based tools simply lack the necessary options. In the script, you have to add 6 specific characters to the command line to make the texture 'DX12 ready.' Without knowing exactly what and where to add, standard conversion won't work
Do i ask him the 6 specific characters? I want to make dx12 mods too š
no hes just bullshitting lmao
I do want to try it out so I'm not just bashing it baselessly but fuck me 60gb
I ain't getting premium for this slop
texture replacements work fine in dx12 as long as they use the correct resolutions and compression formats the vanilla game uses
no going over 2048x2048, use bc1/bc3/bc5 for world textures, bc7 for menu tiles, uncompressed for tint palettes
any texture replacement mod that causes crashes in dx12 is just outdated or poorly compressed
I've found QoL - Artie and Johnny on nexus, but reading the description, I have the feeling at least parts of it would be incompatible (or already adressed) by CI/GI.. I guess I'll start my run with only those 2
Qol / CI fully incompatible.
using both would only cause issues
Qol can be used with TOR iirc
I am currently on CI with tor and gi. Pretty happy with it
I've just found your guide about textures in gdocs, much better than dominator answer š
glad you enjoy it!
Don't know about TOR, will check it out
i just realized that i dont think i've been very clear at all, i'm the author of gi, one of the leading devs on TOR, and also contributed towards CI's development lmao
What's the full name of TOR?
the outlaw's return
A Brief Guide to RDR2 Texture Compression By xuru and Kermit, with the help of iAbokai This guide has been typed up assuming the reader already has the latest versions of Adobe Photoshop and the CodeX modding tool installed. Having them is a requirement to follow this guide, although some of th...
I knew you were author of GI, I've found it on your mod list in gdocs. Cheers for all those great mods!
np, glad you like them!
Sorry, all of this is a bit out of topic regarding reno š¬
But, does anyone what is the purpose of the "overwrite" tick in LMM? It seems wether you check it or not, load order will do its magic, and N+1 mod will overwrite N mod if there are common files.
Am I missing something?
I ignore that button. Just go by load order
So confusing lol
its simply if you have 2 mods that modify the same file, you can choose which one takes priority
thats all
if your mods dont conflict, it will do nothing
@teal pawn Is your VV+ Custom compatible with reno addon? Asking that because I don't know anything about what both of them does exactly, and I don't want to screw things up
Oh, so it's made to bypass the loadorder? If you check the N mod and don't check the N+1 mod in the load order, N mod will still overwrite N+1 mod... ok thanks for making it clear
just try it, if the game crashes or looks weird, theres ur answer :D
a lot of these mods wont care about reno
I was a bit afraid because it seems this mod touches same thing as reno (shadows, vignette, blur..)
But you're right the best way is to try
wait, you mean ... characture texture overhaul isn't made with love? lol
anyway, i've already learned quite a bit from reading through this bit of convo today... turnes out spending countless hours reading through stuff on nexus isn't necessarily the way to go! too many youtubers putting together a list where half the stuff they use isn't compatible with each other or doesn't work as intended.
A lot of conflicts between TOR and GI. Which one to put last?
Gi should have a tor merge
I didn't find that, there was a CI merge
its on gi page, 3rd optional file
install order: ci main file, tor (ci merge), gi (tor merge)
Oh my bad I was looking in the TOR page, thanks a bunch
had issues with the shaders being entirely broken with vulkan, either broken decomp or something else. I'll have to try again at some point and see if it can be fixed
What is Tor?
Thanks m8
Mmm I looking for a modding guide, but all I find are "mod installing guides".
Can anyone point me to a guide to "create" mods? I'm particularly looking at how to mod strings. I've found strings.gxt2 in mods so I know what it should look like but I'm looking for how to extract the original string ressources
totally, was using them together without any issues
well, i guess the only thing that could be considered an issue is renodx's vignette slider not working, since my custom version of vv+ already has vignette force disabled completely
no idea where this is from, but been using it myself for a few years now
should have all strings from the vanilla game
Sorry been out of the loop for this game was there ever anything tried with renovk? I never could get the mod to work on dx
from what i understand, musa basically couldnt get the shader decomp to work on vulkan in the first place
hopefully it can be tried again
it didn't need any of the renovk stuff
the only functionality that I needed was already there
wdym? it works on vulkan now?
RenoVKās improvements are making the devkit easier to use and getting SDR to hdr
Mods that work using a gameās native hdr were already possible
yeah i was taking a look at that. i was admittedly curious to see the weather stuff but the textures just look more sharpened
I don't know where to adress myself to troubleshoot those and I'm pretty sure it has nothing to do with reno as I still have the issue when I set addon preset to off... but maybe someone here can help.
I have weird exposure changes issues. So far I notice them indoor, next to a windows (I guess it has to do with the amount of exterior light hitting the cam). I have those sudden/violent exposure changes, totaly pulling me out of immersion.
Very clear on this short clip.
And on top of that in the same clip, 2 other issues :
- some wood branches textures poping out of nowhere
- Javie's poncho flying at 2000FPS
I'm off to try and find out which mods are culprits (30 lml folders and 15 ASIs š¬ ) but if someone has a clue...
Well it seems the branches texture bug and javier's weird poncho physics are vanilla issues (still happening with no LML mods and ASIs)
(My god how Arthurs vanilla face is awfull š )
The exposure bug disappears without the LMLs and with the ASIs (so off to do some dichotomy with the LMLs)
Woaw find it! It's the Dynamic Seasons mod, and only in autumn! (well at least not summer, haven't tested winter/spring). A pity because I was looking forward to playing with this seasons mechanics.
yeah this mod is a meme
No, there are issues preventing them from making renodx for Vulkan rdr2, itās just unrelated to the renoVK toolkit/sdk
@brother_london @TyrelBlazer As far as I know, RDR2 is this year.
mr Musa i'm still saving my mom weekly pocket money to give u for a Vulkan Mod
u could get filthy rich
Hi, where do I put the Reno file?
in the folder where the game exe is and dxgi.dll (reshade)
Thanks, and after launching Reshade with Reno DX, are there any parameters to modify?
Set peak brightness according to your screen max peak brightness and youāre good to go.
You can try āmatch sdrā also, thatās what use
hey guys..i wanna play with motion blur off..is this achievable right now or should i wait for a stable release of the mod?
it seems to work fine but I haven't tested it a lot
alright i'll give it a try..thanks..appreciate your work
does pdo reloaded crash the game in dx12? what about seasons and vistigia?
seasons and vestigia is fine in my experience
and whyems visuals
anyone has a alist of recommended mods? that looks fine with reno? i tried dominators overhaul and It was terrible.
this is pretty subtle / lightweight. works well with reno https://www.nexusmods.com/reddeadredemption2/mods/6335
tbh I find most of the visuals / lighting overhauls kinda wack. this mod for particle effects looks great though. https://www.nexusmods.com/reddeadredemption2/mods/1526
something crashing my game and I don't know what ive deleted like every texture mod mostly have installed ones recommended here
It might be PDO which I would hate to lose
it crashes like randomly not before load
This Mod is good but must be used without other effect mods cause it breaks everything otherwise
As long as it loads last you should be fine. But yeah other visual overhauls will need patches / merges
it depends what u are using. I had a profile with different visual effect mods and this one used to break others for me
It's a good mod though and I kept it cause I don't like major overhauls for RDR2
to whoever it's new to RDR2 modding and wants a Vanilla+ experience, I always advice to use just one texture and one effect overhaul
I made thousands of testing and I know the safest mods to use not to break spawns and visuals and have a fairly safe run
yeah after more research i think it's vistigia that's crashing
i can probably just go without it want to keep seasons tho if possible
I'm fine with PDO since the beginning of my run.
I've uninstalled Seasons/Winter/Automn though, because there was too many lighting issues, and I wasn't quite happy with the overall changes (especially this constant "haze" in spring, making the game washed out)
I have random crashes but only at the game start so it's OK.
And a systematic halt when approaching Saint Denis but I think it is TTO. I'll have to remove it now because ||I'm off to save the kid||.
yeah man it is kinda wack that it is summer the whole time though
I haven't even experienced seasons yet since it takes 10 in game hours to switch lol
https://www.nexusmods.com/reddeadredemption2/mods/798 also wondering if this mod can ease the abrupt day night transitions
thanks
idk if itll help cuz its just a bug with dx12
doesnt happen on vulkan
any recommended textures mod?
Just TTO
If you're on vulkan, otherwise with dx12 it causes crashes in St Denis š
i cant play this game at all on dx12 crashing all the time kek
like even without reno
yes I have a lot of crashes even without texture mods.. FFFFFF errors, especially now I'm in Saint Denis!
tbh it's not worth it playing this game on DX12
No matter how good Reno looks, it's just full of issues
yeah its sad, really wanna play this with reno
maybe in a year or so we can finally get vulkan to work
by we i mean big brain ritsu and musa
xd
my question is if they really realese an uodate this year are they gonna fix Dx12?
Can't believe they left it in this state
wait is there a difference between vulkan and dx12 in this game?
because i switched to dx12 for renodx like a while ago and i don't remember noticing a difference
now im really curious lol
prolly not lmao i hope they add some nice stuff like RT tho
dx12 has a microstutter bug (only some ppl seem to experience it tho) and the main issue is theres a very abrupt day/night transition
it just flicks from day to night instantly instead of gradually like Vulkan, some bug with the DX12 build
the other thing with DX12 is it doesnt support mods like TTO (texture overhaul) which is a rly nice mod to have
For me performance is also worse on dx12
dunno I just canāt play this, some days it just wonāt even boot because of some memory error
I get better 1% low on Vulkan. But it's not that noticeable if you are capping to 60
Capping to 60
Yeah it's not ideal but in general I cap to 60 for rockstar games. It's less required with modern titles but idk it seems to spare me headache
If it had FG sure Iāll cap native to 60
Framegen
hm?
Slop
Nvidias FG is pretty good now tbh
i used to hate it badly
AMDs is probably still cope

i was using it in witcher with a mere 90fps cap so 45 native and it was surprisingly good
but only driver cap worked, everything else stuttered or had mad latency
which is from the old ass streamline iirc
Woke nonsense. I like my frames like how god intended.
TBF I was anti dlss / upscaling for a long time. But I don't think I'll be converted over to fg any time soon
i still dislike it when uncapped kinda
i much prefer with proper capping with like SK/DisplayCommander/Driver
RTSS is kinda ass for me for FG
even with the reflex cap it wasnt as stable
and without reflex cap in rtss its giga latency
with a good base framerate like 60 or better preferably more, it's legimately indigtinguishable from "real frames" the input lag is like nothing with reflex and nobody would actually notice it
at least x2 mode, x3 and x4 require a 240 hertz monitor basically
by not using it, you are leaving performance on the table, a lot of it
Would say completely indistinguishable but certainly good enough by now that i dont care too much
well it's all relative right, it's much better at ultra high resolutions too just like DLSS
the added smoothness vs just normal 60 by now is worth the slight impact in certain aspects of the image
really all "AI" graphical tech is kinda designed for 4k
it's based on the information that it's being fed and there is much more of that at 4k
yeah
I haven't had a good experience with MFG x3 or x4, but I think it's because my monitor is only 175 hertz
it basically divides your framerate by that number versus your refresh rate, so like 175 x4 means it's effecitvely working off a 45 base framerate
yeah im 120hz mainly with the G5, sometimes i mess with 165hz mode but the black crush is meh
so mfg is off the table for me anyways
partially why i sent back the 5090FE last year kek
yeah you really need even more hertz than 240 to use x4
yeah 3x is perfect for 240 id say
FG works best with a framerate in the 70s 80s
yep exactly, I can't wait until dynamic frame gen comes out
I still feel like for ultra demanding games x2 is the sweet spot because even a 5090 can't push over 60 at cyberpunk maxed
but like for a game like that you know FG to 100 fps is perfect
no 5090? pathetic
still rockin the 3090 on my main rig. built one for my brother with a 4090, but he mainly uses it to self host ai models. Wll probably grab whatevr the top 60 series is at launch.
no, u only get 5090 TI (36gb VRAM and $5500)
probably not now, but if you got its at retail and sold your 4090 you essentially upgrade for nothing
my net upgrade was $200
But a downside of using vulkan is it only supports HDR with fullscreen and I HATE fullscreen (I want to alt tab without waiting 5 sec for my screen to resync)
yeah that's worth it
90 class cards prices are getting insane, i got my 4090 for $1700 and i can sell it for $2000 now but since launch the 5090 never been below $3000 where i live lol
right now im only interested to upgrade when something will give me double the performance
honestly i never realized that day to night was only a dx12 thing i always thought it was a general bug or something lol
Never saw that day to night bug and Iām on dx12
ome of those things you notice once and then always from then on
the reno is so worth using that I am sticking with dx12 but the reasons to switch to vulkan keep piling up
where can I download the latest renodx plugin for red dead 2, new hdr user. thanks in advance š
check pinned messages
Top right corner of the screen, on the left side of the search bar you can find the pinned messages
the nights are still so washed out/bloomy on vanilla HDR I just tried it with fixes
I don't think i can handle the vulkan hdr downgrade lol
when I do think the Vanilla HDR is bad, it's not TW3 type of shit and far from being unplayable
i'd rather play with mods, no broken visuals and stable frame time if I'm forced to chose
using BFF and increasing saturation sealed the deal for me
the vulkan frametime is unfortunately not stable though, it's probably better than dx12 the microstutter persists no matter what you do in this game
i've got zero issues with Vulkan
you probably do they are much less noticeable than the dx12 stutter in St. Denis. I was just playing and had a hitch and I have essentially top of the line pc
you are talking about St. Denis like the whole game is there
i had an rtss framerate cap though so i took that off maybe that caused it
Vulkan is perfect and got few itches In Saint Denis only compared to DX12
and the frame time graphic is neat
I dunno i'm not done with the game yet, but St Denis is like halfway
honestly the biggest difference in the night hdr is the bloom around highlights in vanilla
i wonder if that could be modded out maybe whyems visuals
no, there are 100% graphics glitches with shadows/night transitions in dx12
but the reno hdr for my money is the most game changing mod there is and I have a ton of them
Witcher 3ās vanilla hdr simply being functional already makes it one of the best even if it doesnāt get very bright
i mean its just SDR with bloom running after the tonemapping iirc
Bloom and some effects like fire
but atleast no mismatch in gamma
It clips heavily in sdr
No gamma mismatch or any other fuckery
Puts it way ahead of most of the industry
yeah rdr2 is one of the few games where i just can't stand it's native presentation
most are wrong but "fine" with tweaks
maybe inverse tonemapper would actually be the best way to play this game if you must use Vulkan
lol I kinda like ITM, i use it in ARC Raiders rtx HDR with middle gray way down so the menu/ui is not insane. It looks way better than SDR IMO
dunno I tried it yesterday again in a pretty old DX9 game
400 nit works somewhat okay but I canāt really go much higher without wanting to gouge my eyes out
it looks better on newer games but yeah 600 nit cap for sure
TW3 looks horrible at least for me compared to RDR2 without Reno. Now I know I can't trust my eyes either
welp I updated windows changed nothing else and my working game now won't launch at all god damn this game
basically no asis work with katest windows update not sure if vulkan even matters
ill try new scripthook
lattest scriphook fixed it thank god
@flint crater i was using an old version of the mod the new one even better way more tranformative than any mod imo
its crazy how much good HDR can transform a game, right
if u arent already using it, make sure u use DLSS4.5, it greatly improves small particles like from a fire or explosion and can actually quite improve the HDR experience cuz those small particles and details wont dissapear and be lost due to DLSS like they used to
yeah what preset
i use preset M but L can have higher quality with more performance cost
i use M with DLAA or DLSS quality
and i have a 4080
@old aspen
Yeha i saw a comparison where M messed up the trees I'll try L @white oyster
i havent noticed any tree issues but maybe thats just me lol idk
M only messed trees up when it's fed stupid resolutions and it tries to reconstruct them
it happens on 4k dlss quality, too
it's just additional sharpening in profile M
the sharpening isnt bad if u disable the ingame sharpening tho
i use dlss quality or DLAA with M
Do the DLSS sharpening sliders in game work? Or do you have to force disable it through the driver?
from my testing the in game dlss sharpness slider doesn't do anything
Strange, it works for me in Vulkan
So current status is good HDR via RenoDX and broken Day and Night cycle, or the mod above, worse HDR but working day and night cycle, Am I right?
^^ BFF like musa said for vulkan if you want a closer look to sdr colour grade. Reno if you are on dx12
I use DLAA with K, what's the difference with M?
@slate wren thanks!
K is DLSS 4.0, M is the new DLSS4.5 model (gen2 transformer)
some people say its a bit too sharpened when used with DLSS Quality or DLAA, but i personally use it for dlss quality and have no issues
it was moslty designed for DLSS performance though
Oh ok, thanks for the info. I actually set the "recommended" setting in the override, so nvidia chose K for me. I don't know if it would be worth to manually change to M.
you will have less FPS with M but it resolves small details and espceially small glowing particles a lot better which improves HDR a lot in this game
like embers off a fire and stuff actually show up instead of dissapearing into the dlss noise like with M
Will try it at next game crash š
OK I've tried M, but it's quite sharp indeed, too much for my taste I think
Samsung phone camera ahh screenshot
I spoke a bit too soon when I originally said that. It's 100% the SDR tonemapping unmodified, but it goes a decent bit above SDR range in plenty of situations. In some ways I almost feel like that's worse than just SDR though, cause the intensity they would have liked when clipping is replaced with some dull gradients
post processing pushes it up higher still

heads up for anyone who updates to latest stable version of windows RDR2 Scriptohook v2 no longer works
alexander blades version does
What settings should I use in Lilium Black Floor Fix? First time using it
just tick and input value equal to game paper white aka game brightness.
In processing cutoff?
although not needed with renodx mod
I'm not using Reno because it doesn't work in Vulkan š so yeah trying to fix native hdr
SDR is better
sdr elumation something
HDR on in windows
Lilium sdr trc fix shader will fix gamma when displaying sdr games in hdr
Everyone use completely different setup here
same as paper white
in game
Yeah in game I have 130, just wanted to make sure it's the slider
Day by day HDR gaming is getting more convoluted
Vulkan Renodx HDR is the most demanded thing here in this page
Musa is expert
So I shouldn't use HDR black floor fix and in-game HDR, just SDR in-game and HDR in windows + lilium map SDR into HDR?
@flint crater
Well you need to have hdr swapchain to use map sdr into hdr
Sdr trc fix is the gamma fix shader if youāre just playing in sdr
Is there a tutorial to follow?
do you mean windows auto hdr with gamma fix ?
I donāt use autohdr
The gamma fix is just cause windows uses srgb
Both for autohdr and sdr in hdr
Managed to find the shader, had to reinstall reshade
Anything I should change here?
And any other shader I should run?
Maybe go through SDR in-game brightness calibration?
I guess target white point to 130?
Default settings to srgb -> 2.2 already
Ignore that stuff
Sdr calibration in game should be at default
Brightness is controlled by Windows sdr content brightness slider
Unless vk is weird about that
Ok, so I leave it as it is on the screenshot, which are defaults, and just control the brightness with windows slider
Thanks š
Should the windows slider just be at 100%?
100% is several hundred nits. Too much for me but itās preference. The slider is paper white
30 is 200 nits
0 is 80
Ok I see formula that checks out, (% * 4) + 80 = final Paperwhite nits
This has been created by absolute monsters
At Microsoft
hello is it normal that i do not have the hdr option in game ?
vulkan require in game fullscreen
hit alt+enter or put the game in fullscreen in teh settings menu
31 + Auto HDR + trcfix is probably best ITM they all are kinda the same though for my money
SK's is good too
How can i install the hdr mod. Must RDR2 in dx12 mode?
Yes
After testing I can confirm that DLSS breaks the day/night transition running DX12, but it works properly with TAA.
I think DLSS also breaks some volumetric weather effects but needs further testing.
It also breaks reflections
and some post effects
FSR too since it uses the same pipeline
I have noticed reflections looking different, but I don't know if they are broken or just resolved differently by the upscaler as some looked sharper š¤
They lack contact hardening and look far more pixelated/aliased in general
All of those issues happen with VK too, it's the upscaling that's busted, not API in this instance
TAA is hard coded into this engine, I cant imagine the mess engineers went through to implement DLSS in this lol
Essentially, TAA is the only usable option in this game, unless you don't care about broken visuals as long as much sharpness wow
interesting, dlss quality does look better though or dlaa of course. I uses dldsr on a 1440p ultrawide it's like 1920p or something like that
I do notice some graphical glitches for sure though
yeah what should TAA sharpening be turned down or does it not matter as much as dlss
personal preference. The game has a soft look to it as is, so I don't mind the default sharpening. Could probably increase the default if you think it's still too soft
I've put sharpening at 0%
TAA and DLSS sharpening work differently. TAA High is softer but more stable. TAA Medium is sharper but more shimmery around fine details like tree leaves and clouds.
At 4K I run TAA High and leave the TAA Sharpening slider on its default setting (20/100)
For TAA Medium however 15/100 looks better.
*meant to answer message above
TBH, you're probably better off using Lilium's CAS than the built-in sharpening (it's not very good)
I just left TAA and sharpening at their default in RDR2, which I think is high and about midway on the slider
upscaling is too busted to bother with
perhaps, wondering if there is a certain amount of unremovable sharpening though
Probably not, though Musa would probably be able to answer that
Though at 4k even with TAA high and no sharpening, I still sometimes got the impression that some high contrast edges are maybe a bit too high contrast
Vulkan API is very performant in Idtech engine games, rainbow six siege and rdr2, very sad to see support is getting dropped on all fronts.
kinda like how samsung lost hdr10+, the branding and muscle of windows + a lot of cutting edge graphical tech is dx12 first. Not that vulkan isn't just as capable is what it is DX crushed opengl too
I don't think the performance issues of dx12 versus vulkan are inherent to the renderer either although vulkan does seem to perform better with less optimizing but I don't know if that is actually the case from a development standpoint
It's a bitch to work with afaik
Also doesn't have a massive corpo behind it
siege dropped vulkan
idtech performance and optimization has little to do with vulkan, rdr2 doesn't perform any different on vk, maybe better for specific gpu architectures
rdr2 performs much better on Vulkan than DX12 lol wdym
there is a horrible microstutter for tons of ppl on dx12 as well as numerous bugs not present on vulkan
https://www.nexusmods.com/reddeadredemption2/mods/5280 this fixes most stutters for me
the dx12 graphical bugs are awful though, easily makes it unusable for me
lots of flickering shadows in specific mission sequences
Please note: If you're running the game on Dx12 the mod might not work, so switch to Vulkan and then the mod should work. Also since this is a "Gameconfig.xml" mod so if you're using any other gameconfig mod then it will conflict with this mod, but luckily the fix requires a very simple change in the game config file, check out my pinned comment on how to do that.

oof, not sure how i missed that
you guys know if there is a way to use vulkan and hdr in borderless?
I would say special k fake fullscreen but special K and vulkan don't get along for this game last I tested
Haven't checked recently though
Hello, i played 130 hours of this game in DX12 not knowing the day/night instant shift was caused by DX12. Also some weird shadows flickers issue on the edge of my screen. All of this is resolved with Vulkan š„²
Also i'm trying to use the RenoDX build 7 and i'm not sure if my install is correct. I installed ReShade using Vulkan api, dragged the renodx-rdr2.addon64 in the root folder, i can access all the settings of renodx in game but it doesn't affect anything in game. What am i doing wrong
what youre doing wrong is that vulkan doesnt work with renodx
xd
only dx12 supported for now
are there any similar alternatives to renodx that work for vulkan? or is reno the only hdr fix out there for this game
i'll take another crack at vulkan this week
oh my, thats great to hear
i'm assuming there really is no possible fix for hdr not working on vulkan's borderless windowed mode though
or if there is, it would probably require actual lml modding
ya maybe there's something in the renovk code that could work idk
I've endured the numerous FFFF FFFF unknown errors (really a PITA when it occurs just before the end of a long main mission and you have to do it all again and stress for the next crash).
I've endured the numerous fails at game start
Now I'm at the epilogue, too late to switch to Vulkan š
But man it was a real pain to run this modded game on dx12!
Disable all overlays you can
I was getting a bunch of crashes, but after disabling RTSS and Steam, it went away
I don't know if I'm lucky or if this is it, but I've disabled Steam and Nvidia overlays and the game launched at 1st try!
Well.. Saint Denis is still randomly FFFFFing me..
Please please please find a way, I need an excuse to begin my 14th playthrough
After several successful game starts without a crash, I can say your solution of disabling overlays (Steam and Nvidia for me, and using RTSS only on demand), it really fixed my crash issues on game launch!
Still have FFFFF errors during game, but that's another matter
Maybe some other mods? I only use renodx and the ps button prompts
Haven't seen the error you're describing yet
it's a memory error, it's much more likely to get triggered if using mods like WhyEm's and Red Dead Offline etc., which bloat the game
before the error you're likely to see other issues, like low priority props/NPCs not spawning
e.g. train and tram passengers
^
I remember I used to have the interactions where you give a beggar money break
i don't have any mods installed rn though i think
version.dll/online content unlocker issue
its a specific bug that happens from trying to load some specific scripts from red dead online, it breaks that encounter, on top of some others
not something to worry about anymore though, just stay away from the version.dll asi loader, and use thirteenag's ultimate asi loader instead
and if you want to load online content into the game, use the multiplayer asset enabler mod
does the same thing as version.dll/online content unlocker, but without the bugs
does this work with puredarks frame gen mod? cause i cant get it to work
bruh was spreading hope like rainbows
Iāll wait till after I finish requiem
My MFG mod works for RDR2, but no reno afaik
is 400 nits sun enough to wash away the rain?
May actually pick the game back up if Vulkan can happen (though realistically that means playing a few hours and getting bored).
u gotta get into the RDR2 pace and do all the sides and discover all the secrets. if u use this approach and do a bit a role playing it could win u over
Its great they have candles in the game
no im pretty sure theyre incompatible
vulkan
vanilla / reno
this is just with 2.2 gamma and srgb lut sampling
haven't added in any other stuff
AYO?
my god
Thought youāre not working on this until atleast re9 is done?
idk if its gonna have cbuffers though
maybe after re9 i'll do that
for now i'll see if I can just get a build that just does lut sampling in srgb and then applies black floor fix

God is real, and his name is Musa
RDR2 is HDR10 right?
imma cryin right here, right now š
Getting reno working with optiscaler isn't too hard right?
@flint crater u so goated i swear

for whatever reason
vulkan in sdr
is at 400 nits
like it doesn't react to the sdr content brightness slider
I have rtx hdr turned off
same with autohdr
don't think its doing srgb gamma

Um
- requires vulkan reshade and exclusive fullscreen
- just a hardcoded gamma/lut encoding fix for now
- use in game sliders to adjust game/peak brightness

š

We don't deserve this man, king shit šāāļø
I think I've found the first bug, when you use the binoculars or the scope of a weapon the bottom half of the scope textures flickers
Holy shit, just at the right time. Coming back to RDR2 after 5 years and playing with mods which mostly requires vulkan
I had the exact same issue yesterday while I was testing native HDR, I don't really check the peak brightness often in games, but it seemed extremely dim after setting the slider to 1000 nits
I restarted the game and it seems to have fixed it, which I assume you figured out already
I'm naming my first child Musa
holy shittt we actually got it
im trying this asap when im off work
hell yeah

wait
doesn't the "dx" in renodx stand for directx
so shouldnt this version of the addon be called renovk
yes
technically also yes
xd
Renovation Engine for DirectX ||(Games)||
Ya and that project exists and mods for Vulkan games exist, but most ppl just google renodx so not everything has been renamed
do i have to have Reshade for rdr2 reno
So are both versions going to be worked on? Or is VK the focus for now?
Very cool though that there are mods for both APIs now
Ofc you had to release it when I'm away from my pc for 3 weeks
Looks good. Something wrong with dead eye though
fuck dx12
just gonna do vk for now
will have to see about getting sliders
I'm new here, but looks like I'm just in time for Vulkan; should this be pinned for easy access?
I should set up ssh with my desktop and laptop so I can edit code without having to alt tab
You want to remote in?
ya
Tailscale is probably the least amount of headache
Plus it allows for easy remote from your phone
Vulkan Build 2:
- requires vulkan reshade and exclusive fullscreen
- just a hardcoded gamma/lut encoding fix for now
- use in game sliders to adjust game/peak brightness
Changes:
fixes deadeye/eagle eye
I want to have sexual intercourse with this man
well if they fix all the bugs with DX12 that wouldnt be the wrost thing ever lol
+1 for tailscale, goated
Gta V enhanced runs and looks like a dream and it's dx12 so I would gladly take a dx12 only rdr2 enhanced if it meets that quality standard
rdr2 also looks and runs like a dream on vulkan to be fair, so i dont think thats just cuz of DX12. gta 5 was just never developed for Vulkan
Well yeah, but what I meant to say was that at the end of the day it doesn't really matter what API they use as long as the end result is good, and they've shown to be capable of making it work with both so vulkan, dx12, doesn't matter as long as it's not a stuttery ugly mess.
ya thats the only issue i havbe with rdr2 having dx12, its had a crazy microstutter and other bugs since release
it's just better on controller on a big ass TV and with autoaim turned on i just realized that last week
just wander around don't fast travel take the side missions that pop up, kill rob randos
story missions are good but aren't the best part of the game for me
yeah i hated teh combat so much and realized it was just trying to wrangle Arthur on a hall effect keyboard that i hated
on controller it plays so much smoother and yeah i think i have it on "narrow" setting but "normal" for horseback
combat with auto aim is pretty fun it's like a shooting gallery
kb & m is miserable to play. Especially with the movement. Shooting feels way more fun but on foot and horseback travel is so ass. RDR1 is a bit more playable as the movement isnt so heavy and you can't fuck up on the horse too bad. RDR2 is definitely a controller game though
I'm not even sure i enjoyed the shooting on mouse either, getting in an out of cover is so frustrating on keyboard for me compared to controller
i dont' think i will ever go back tbh
tbf I did play hybrid first person with kb & m. 1st person for on foot and shooting and 3rd person for horse travel. It was kinda novel
I wish it was like fluid third person aiming with magneticism near enemies you know like any other modern shooter on controller haha
i fee like the way they throw enemies at you makes free aim on controller very frustrating though
yeah game feels like it was designed to be played with aim assist on. Very easy. Press LT and flick RS up for ez headshots
Free aim is a chore. especially on horseback
right well free aim on horseback is impossible
if they had a better auto ride it would be a bit more tolerable but sadly you got to do both
I don't think it's a difficulty thing i think it's how they spawn enemies on your flank, the number of enemies, and the fact that their free aim just blows
like i play plenty of shooters on console just fine
red dead is the only one where autoaim feels like it is just a better experience
I think its a movement issue rather than a shooting/aiming issue. Or just the input seems to have a consistent base lag to it
yeah and you know rockstar just can't innovate and gta 6 will have the same stupid aiming system that literally no other games use anymore
tbf gta is also a controller game for me. driving is just so much more reliable on controller
this might be the move though forreal
i def need an fov mod for that first person though it's so narrow
gta 4 driving on kb&m
You could probably keep a contoller on the side for horseback. That would be pretty sweet. I just couldnt be bothered switching inputs
will we eventually get brightness and contrast/saturation sliders, etc for vulkan or will it stay kinda how it works now?
Havenāt tried adding them to a vulkan game yet. Will do after requiem
Well gotta do quantum break after requiem
But then I can add sliders
xd
im actually interested in that one too
i was thinking about it too im into some remedy games recently lol, i finished control and currently playing through alan wake 2
I think itās on Pumbo to do list
Any chance for collaboration?
10 years later and it looks better than 99% of games out there
ya i'll get hdr working then I can port it over to luma and pumbo can add dlss whenever he gets to it
just kinda worked when doing nms
using renovk?
no just regular renodx
problem is
they changed the entrypoint in the shader
from main()
to Vkmain()
so I have to manually edit the spv
like I have to compile normally then go into the spv and rename main to vkmain
the fuck
so I'm not gonna do slang cause then it'll compile normally. I'll keep it as glsl and compile the spvs manually with my script that edits them
idk enough about compilation, this seems like something that would be easier to fix there than manually with each shader
I asked ai slop and it says that to compile with vulkan you have to use main() as the entry point
the script i'm running does the compilation as well as the renaming of the entry point
ok looks like --source-entrypoint main -e VkMain can be done
idk if its just me but with exclusive fullscreen everything looks way to dark
like leaving a building and entering looks good but after you do it just goes dark
@flint crater can u share your Patreon? on the weekend I will contribute for this Mod. I also would like to gently ask everyone here who can/want/feel to send some "actual love" to Musa
just have a ko-fi page:
https://ko-fi.com/musaqh
did my part š«¶
do i put rdr2 hdr on or off
on
the setting doesnt show up for some reason
and my monitors HDR settings in the OSD dontshow up until i exit the game
and i have reshade installed onto it
do you have it set to exclusive fullscreen?
the hdr option only shows if using exclusive fullscreen
yes its fullscreen
worked after restart thanks
I really wish there was a mod to stop making the game disable HDR when you alt tab lol
Too bad Reno canāt do that
get a 2nd monitor broke boiiiiii
jk. its a pain. but alt enter works well enough
it only happens cuz i have a second monitor wdym š i need to alt tab to go to my other screen
cuz its exclusive fullscreen, it constrains my mouse till i alt tab
does display commander not help? I don't know if it supports vulkan and I've not swapped over to vulkan on RDR2 yet, either, but just an idea
rip. just get a 2nd pc lol
what would i do with display commander? ive never used it before so idk
Paper white ingame is supposed to be set to 200 ingame with latest RenoVulkan mod? No way to just change UI brightness?
paper white is preference
Vulkan Release Candidate 1:
- requires Vulkan ReShade and Exclusive Fullscreen
- as usual with RenoDX, disable
generic depthandeffect runtime syncaddons in the ReShade add-ons tab as they are unused - if you have the
LUT Encodingslider set toVanilla SDR, make sure to set the game's brightness slider in SDR to default, as it uses that value. - if you previously used the dx12 build, make sure to reset your settings as sliders have changed
Changes:
- added sliders and the features from the old dx12 build
I'm honestly not sure, and no, the only effect I have enabled is EOTF_Boost which only boosts brightness
I think the "vanilla HDR" might be wrong somehow (I just turned off the presets in RenoDX), because I've never seen it so orange
The highlights in the images became completely blown out when I converted them to PNG, but in-game they look fine
in any case, awesome work Musa!
The ritsu vulkan reshade right ?
Regular reshade is fine

Ritsu one was for fg but then that got merged anyway
Actually nevermind, the orange hue is due to a mod I have ~ Dynamic Seasons
It adds seasons to the game and it's currently Autumn, so everything is orange basically, and the RenoDX sRGB LUT encoding is putting it back to a white/blueish and a bit more blown-out
Here's a comparison between sRGB LUT Encoding (first) and Vanilla HDR LUT Encoding (second)
srgb lut encoding and vanilla sdr lut encoding will match the intended look of the luts
rockstar broke the lut sampling in hdr
unless its a case like cyanide's cyberpunk mods
where he makes them for the broken hdr
noted, I'll stick with Vanilla SDR or sRGB encodings then
vanilla sdr is the actual intended one cause that's what they use in sdr
i thought vanilla sdr looked sort of crushed at night so I added srgb
yeah, I assume it will really depend on the graphic mods you are running
the only 2 "big" graphics mod that affect colors that I have are Visual Redemption with Vanilla colors style + Dynamic seasons, everything else are texture mods
peak
eagle eye filter is still broken though
looks overexposed
The man actually did it
Yeah eagle eye and dead eye still look wrong, honestly they don't even look "broken" per se, just different for whatever reason
Also the filter used when the weapon wheel pops up is also wrong, way too bright currently
Yeah vanilla sdr does look a bit too dark at night and in corners with strong ambient occlusion, after testing it a bit srgb feels a bit more balanced
Yeah vanilla sdr at night time verges on black crush especially in wooded areas. Using bff fix would achieve a similar result. Srgb on the dx12 mod was most usable for gameplay at night. But matching sdr was a more striking image imo
With reno I removed all rdr2 weather mods, the game looks better without them now.
sent my small support. I'm on mom allowance so next weeks will do more! Thank u for this Mod ā¤ļø
I've been testing a bunch and I'm not quite sure if I fully "trust" the 2.2 emulated gamma, it's a similar problem I had with renodx for GTAVE, maybe the 2.2 is more technically correct but it feels like it crushes blacks too much, the vanilla gamma feels more like what was intended, also sorry if I might not use the correct technical lingo, I'm not a super expert about this stuff, just sharing my opinion with the little knowledge that I have
Vanilla/renodx
2.2 is likely what they would have seen when making the game
I thought it looked pretty crushed so I ended up raising shadows and adding the srgb lut sampling option
with sdr eotf emulation off day time looks washed out
with it on then night time looks crushed
2.2 emulation on with lowered vignette is probably best
lowering vignette gives you way more visibility
yeahhhh exact same thing I noticed as well, night looks good with it off but day with it looks a bit washed out even in vanilla, I'll have to try lowering vignette and see how it goes
I usually don't like lowering effects by default but I just know people on nexus are gonna complain when I finally upload so I'll prob lower vignette strength by default
Yeah good call, it's a shame that there doesn't seem to be a perfect middle balance because I loooove the punchy look of 2.2 but the crushed black make me a bit sad, I'll have to fiddle with it a bit more, btw is there a vignette setting do you currently suggest?
nah haven't really played around with it much
whatever's the highest that makes nights not too crushed I guess
Also I do have a question about this, if 2.2 was likely the original intention while making the game why does the game in vanilla sdr defaults to a more washed out gamma than the emulated 2.2 in reno? Isn't vanilla sdr considered the most "correct" baseline?
when you say in vanilla sdr
do you mean when you turn off hdr in game and play?
cause if you still have hdr on in windows
it uses srgb gamma to decode the image
basically the game has its own gamma encoding and the displays we use have their own decoding
the game in sdr used an encoding that's similar to srgb
and the vast majority of monitors ship with 2.2
even monitors in their "srgb" mode
Yeah, I mean hdr off in game
usually are 2.2 gamma with proper gamut
ya if you have hdr off in game but still on in windows
what you'll be seeing is the sdr eotf emulation option set to off
Oh ok, makes sense
if you use the lilium sdr trc fix reshade shader
its default settings converts srgb to 2.2
Just tried it, and damn, never knew that. But then I have the obvious question: suppose that for whatever reason I don't have/can't use reshade to fix it, what's the normal way to see the game in it's intended 2.2 sdr gamma? hdr off in windows?
ya hdr off in windows or you use one of those icc profiles that does srgb -> 2.2
the icc profiles will also mess with hdr though
so you gotta switch the profile which is annoying
Yeah... when i first got my display(my first HDR display) I spent maybe half a week trying to make sense of it because sometimes it looked right sometimes it looked wrong, I already knew that HDR in windows was kind of messed up and confusing but damn I wasn't ready lol
So I basically settled with leaving HDR on in windows and spare my sanity
Ya that was me for years before I finally understood what srgb and 2.2 were after joining hdr den
Yeah I said to spare my sanity and yet here I am lmao, I guess the thought that I might not be experiencing the content as the artists intended never fully left my brain
Ya and the idea that the intent of the artists getting butchered by bad code irks me
Man the fact that reno is as big as it is is actually kinda sad, it just showcases how incompetently put together almost all HDR packages are.
@flint crater tuning down vignette and dithering is preferable?
Ya I used grain instead of dithering
gta 5 reno has a similar look. Defaults have blacks / shadows on the verge of crush. Iirc I played through campaign with shadows at 55 and that was a nice balance betwen looks and playability
Removing Vignette gives much more color brightness
I don't think its fixed
Removing vignette is a must
Also i think something is off if you hold down the d pad
where TF I can download this?
#1413570163789266954 message
its in the pinned messages
What exactly does dithering do? I played with it but for the life of me I couldn't figure it out, I see zero difference between dithering off vs dithering max, also by grain you mean film grain?
dithering hides banding
ya film grain
Oh really? So I guess I should try it in over gradients. So you prefer to use film grain over that? Interesting, I don't mind film grain but I'm always hesitant to use it when the vanilla game didn't, I'm one of those freaks who doesn't turn off film grain, motion blur, chromatic aberration, depth of field etc etc if the game defaults to those effect, but adding them when they're not there always felt "wrong" to me, but experimenting is fun so I'll give film grain a shot
i usually keep them all on except chromatic aberration because i already hate to see it in my glasses and i don't wanna see it in games too
film grain has a similar effect to dithering
idk why the game doesn't have film grain, seems like a really obvious fit
Honestly yeah I agree, it has vignetting for that old film look but not film grain, curious choice
Also I played around with dithering and honestly in HDR I couldn't tell a single difference, only in SDR the banding was blatantly obvious with dithering disabled
the vanilla hdr has bad banding at night
the dithering is supposed to help with that
Something that I still can't get out of my head is this damn gamma, especially after fiddling with gtaVE reno again, so the 2.2 gamma correction is supposed to be the more accurate one right? But if it is then why does it crushes black? Sometimes to the point where things just look like blobs of black with no detail, is that really the most intended way to experience the content? Are all those crushed blacks what the artists saw and chose when making the game?
with gtav 2.2 is actually what the game itself encodes in
wouldn't make sense for them to encode with 2.2 but use srgb on their displays
its like pragmata and mh wilds
Really? But the blacks are so damn crushed in gtave š I cannot wrap my head around that the artists wanted things to be so damn black at night, look at Trevor's car! To my eyes it just doesn't look right. These are the things that keep me up at night. Damn you gamma!
ultimately just go with whatever you like. gamma correction off with increased flare often looks better
I know I know, it's just that I've always had this ultra purist mindset about these things, I always put what the artists intended over my own personal preferences which is why I lose my mind a little when I can't get a definitive anwser about the artist's intention. Oh well, I guess I'll have to try and make peace with it.
No point driving yourself insane over it. Artists intent isnt the be all and end all. Artists can get it wrong as well. Take pumbo's work with just cause 3 for example. His end result looks very different to what the game ships with.
I once again ask for your guidance sensei, because I'm starting to feel really dumb and/or insane. So, you said that to see the proper intended image in sdr I should turn off HDR in windows because if I just turn it off in game that won't do, if I understood you correctly. Well I tried it and I couldn't tell a difference between hdr off in windows and hdr off just in game, the same exact image in both cases, for reference my display in sdr is set to srgb colospace and 2.2 gamma, am I doing something wrong or is that expected behavior? Is the image that I'm seeing with hdr off in windows the correct sdr image or I need to set my display differently? Thank in advance for your infinite patience.
what I do when I want to see sdr is
I keep hdr on in windows and I use lilum's sdr trc fix shader
some monitors are srgb in sdr but its rare
your could be one of those
I have a aw3423dwf if it helps at all, idk it just gives me the option for colorspace: srgb or DCI-P3 and gamma which is set to 2.2, so if I do indeed have a monitor that is srgb in sdr does that mean I'm seeing the correct image or do I still need the sdr trc fix to see the correct one?
oh lol that makes sense
aw3423dwf uses srgb in sdr i'm pretty sure
also it has severe black crush in hdr
yeahhhhh unfortunately I just fully discovered it today, did some black levels testing and it's pretty bad in HDR, especially the 1000 nits mode, 400nits mode isn't as bad but still not super great
So just so we're clear on this, does this mean that in sdr(hdr off in windows) I'm seeing the correct image with the correct gamma? Or do I still need the lilium fix if I want the abosolute truest image?
2.2 is the correct image, monitors that use srgb would show the incorrect image
lilum sdr trc fix will show the correct image since it converts srgb -> 2.2
So what you're basically telling me is that without the fix there would have been no easy, "traditional" way for me with this setup to have a fully correct image? Damn I feel like I need a phd just to get a goddamn normal image
Ya lol
Well you could say srgb gamma is mathematically correct
But not the reality of what most content is actually created on
I have a headache
You can use a custom colour profile to convert piecewise to 2.2
Doesn't that fuck with hdr tho? Basically having to switch every time you to want to enable hdr
I got the 27inch aw oled. I use the profile full time. The effect on hdr isn't too noticeable. I find it an acceptable price to fix SDR content
And if you use a custom loader for colour profiles you can set up keybinds to make it less of a hassle to switch
The thing with the alienware monitors is it's a losing battle to chase perfect accuracy across all scenarios
Can you share the profile or how to set it up? I wouldn't mind giving it a go at this point
Sure. I got it from this Reddit post. https://www.reddit.com/r/OLED_Gaming/s/roaKKl2DlK
The profile loader I use is displaycal
You can also use windows settings to swap the default profiles that come on the monitor. (You can get the original profiles back if you grab the firmware for your specific monitor)
I'm somewhat familiar with novideo_srgb but i never truly gave it a go since I read that one the nvidia drivers broke the HDR handling
https://github.com/dylanraga/win11hdr-srgb-to-gamma2.2-icm this may be of use to you as well
this does wonders for making SDR content in HDR mode look way better, like the windows desktop
been using it since i got my oled and its perfect
Yeah I linked it because the first link didn't have a specific profile for his monitor model. So he can just follow the steps on Dylan's GitHub to make his own. It is very useful
Hi guys, should I use the Vulkan or DX12 renodx build?
Vulkan ftw
https://www.reddit.com/r/OLED_Gaming/s/JlNuAzC6Ux
I'm using this one, should be good as well right?
Here's an SDR ICM color profile I've created that applies a curve transformation from sRGB IEC to gamma 2.2: https://github.com/dylanraga/win11hdr-srgb-to-gamma2.2-icm/raw/main/srgb_to_gamma2p2_sdr.icm If you have an NVIDIA GPU, make sure Reference Mode is disabled.
if you want to use other mods, id say vulkan. If you want to play vanilla with good hdr then you can use either
Yeah should be fine
vulkan has less bugs in general like the instant day night transition bug on dx12
How exactly do you do thar?
I can't remember which loader had hotkey support. With displaycal, they have a system tray widget you can switch from
I did try displaycal but I can't figure out how to use the widget to quickly switch profiles
Uh I'm away from my pc, I think you can set up favourite profiles. I have the stock srgb profile and the corrected 2.2 profile. I can select which one I want for what I'm doing at the time
Idk is there a list or something I need to add? right clicking on the widget doesn't show any profiles I can select in windows settings
What are you launching. Displaycal or displaycal profile loader. There will be two separate exes in the install folder
Just launch the profile loader
And in HDR as well it uses srgb? That's why it needs the 2.2 EOTF emulation?
HDR uses PQ. whatās happening is that in SDR youād be mismatching gamma encoding and decoding which adds extra contrast. This doesnāt happen in HDR because thereās just PQ
Then why do we need the gamma correction in HDR in many games?
because games are built around gamma mismatch in mind for SDR
Since HDR doesnt do that (becuase of PQ), you get rasied black floor
You need to apply gamma correction after to 'emulate' the look
Becasue they are made with the mismatch backed in
So you need to recreate it in HDR to make the game look correct
And how do you know if there's a mismatch? Do you basically confront the sdr image with the hdr and assume they backed in the gamma problem?
There's no reason why SDR and HDR shouldn't match in the darker regions of the image
the idea is that we emulate how the game would look on a 2.2 gamma display in sdr
in this game they encode with this weird halfway mix between srgb and 2.2
2.2 is what almost every monitor comes with out of the box
if they did intend for the game to be played on srgb displays, that would also mean that no TV user would see the right image
since TVs don't come with an srgb gamma curve option
i think most monitors don't either
games don't seem to include any kind of proper color management workflow anyway
so it's possible some of the people working on the game were using displays that were calibrated to srgb gamma
and other weren't
First of all, thank you king for taking the time to teach such a dumb dumb like me about this stuff, second of all, is the gamma problem truly omnipresent? Or are there pc games that have proper HDR implementations out of the box that don't bake in the gamma mismatch and if so what would you say are the best implementations you've seen?
basically every game nowadays except for from soft encodes with srgb in SDR. there are very few that actually correct for it properly. Remedy, Naughty Dog, and Square Enix Business Division 1 correct for it
since from soft encodes with 2.2 in SDR their hdr looks correct but their tonemapping looks very desaturated and hue shifted in highlights
its basically accurate to SDR to a fault
Of fucking course from soft does weird shit lol
ya at some point during the ps4 era devs started encoding with srgb instead of 2.2 gamma
i guess from soft lagged behind which ended up being the right thing
microsoft's documentation basically treats srgb and 2.2 as interchangeable which I guess tripped up a lot of devs
2.2 is cheaper so they must have thought to switch to the "correct" one now that they have more processing power
From soft lagging behind? Unheard of! lmao
But i guess they failed successfully loool
Earlier you said that gtav also encodes in 2.2 but it needed gamma correction in HDR, so what's the difference from fromsoft?
The gamma correction option is doing nothing when on and when off itās doing inverse
The gamma correction toggle isnt applying double gamma in GTAV
When you set it to None/off it goes to srgb (if for whatever reason you want that)
Gamma 2.2 is the base 2.2 encode (just now controllable via Reno menu slider)
