A few hours ago, a strong M7.8 earthquake hit Turkey and Syria. Casualties are being reported in both countries. Depth of earthquake was 24km (14.9 miles).

Do mountains block earthquakes? The Taurus Mountains could be the cause of the unevenness on the west side?

Yeah higher altitude areas will not be as affected bc it’s further away vertically from an earthquake

Turkey has declared 7 days of mourning nation-wide and a 3-month long state of emergency in the 10 cities that were hit by the earthquakes

As of 10:55 today, 7108 people are confirmed to have passed and 40910 people are wounded

The authorities have confirmed 5775 collapsed buildings while in total, 11302 buildings are reported to have collapsed
