Important question: Dashlane is dropping Desktop app support in January, so I want to switch. Which password manager should I use?

I recently switched to bitwarden and I'm liking it. Lastpass is garbage don't use it

Google.
Reason: it's implemented into your android phone and desktop Google Chrome as standard, that is all.

I kind of want 2FA code support, and sync between mobile & desktop. I want a desktop app.

#

I use iPhone

#

So that doesn't work Grim

what's your usecase for a desktop app?

I use my password manager for a lot of work, which has a lot of "non-web" applications. So going into a browser constantly for my passwords feels funky. Also Desktop apps can integrate Windows Pin Code/Mac TouchId

grim valve
#

oh bitwarden has a desktop app

neat

#

I don't think google passwords do anything outside of chrome at all

i use bitwarden. i switched after lastpass went paid. it works well, but i think lastpass does a better job signing you into mobile

exotic wing
#

I'm happy for a paid app as long as it's good.

I just use biometrics for mobile bitwarden. I think you can configure the timeout

#

bitwarden is also cheap as fuck if you want the like 3 premium features
2fac support being one of them iirc

regal pier
#

yeah, i feel like its worth paying for a pass manager

keepass doesn't do what you asked for by itself, but is by far the simplest solution to enable you and still be immune to silly things like something going out of business. Just a simple file to sync to any device that needs access.
Not quite sure what you mean by 2FA support unless you mean one that requires 2FA to unlock it, which sounds kinda pointless to me.

Or you could just use 123456 for all your passwords.

#

my friend says 1password is more polished than bitwarden

tame sorrel
#

you could also commit GPG-encrypted passwords to Github, as several people seem to do ¯_(ツ)_/¯

My password manager lets me store 2FA codes against the accounts

#

Which I do for "non-critical" accounts

grim valve
#

yea I do that for discord because my password is stronk but the servers I mod require it

heady wedge
#

ah, keepass lets you store comments for each, which I use for the backup codes for anything non crtical.

#

also for the "password reset" questions because I make nonsense for them because I think they are stupid af

grim valve
#

for example, for my discord (I'm going to wait a minute or so to post this screenshot ofc)

#

there's also name and username above that's cropped

#

I can just clicky the verification code and it autofills it. The one annoying thing is that it doesn't have a popup on android for automatically filling it in

heady wedge
#

o wait, integrating 2FA for account into your manager? that seems extra dumb... defeats the purpose of 2FA

grim valve
#

it makes it significantly weaker yes

exotic wing
#

Well 2FA is more for protecting your account with a rotating password. If your password is leaked someone still can't use your account

grim valve
#

I've also heard good things about 1password

marble beacon
#

I used to use lastpass, but I switched to 1passwrd abt 6 months back

exotic wing
#

It does make it slightly weaker, but I imagine if someone has access to your password manager they'll have access to wherever your 2FA is stored.

grim valve
#

the number of people who switched off of lastpass

#

when they removed mulitplatform support from their free tier

#

is fucking hilarious

#

I wonder how many switched to paid, though

exotic wing
#

So, 1Password, Bitwarden is what I'm hearing so far?

grim valve
#

luckily these days it's pretty easy to switch between password managers

#

bitwarden literally had an "import from lastpass" button where I just upload the csv I downloaded from lastpass. I'm assuming 1password has the same exact thing

marble beacon
#

"We're happy to see you moving off lastpass!"

grim valve
#

yea exactly haha they have lots of incentives to make the transition super easy

I recommend using KeePass. A very solid password manager and has many nice forks like KeePassXC which allows for sync. Has multiple factor authentication (password, file, windows user account) if needed.
If you don't want to bother you can use 1Password. My new employer uses that.

+1 for keepassxc (wasn't aware that it had an automatic sync option, though); I also keep all my TOTP generators in my keepass database as a backup to my phone
