You should make it work on vscode, since ~99.99% of mod developers (and ~100% of good mod developers) use vscode (because of FMTK existing)
VSCode has FMTK. Emacs now has both spritesheet renderer and FMTK. So, maybe 99.99% need to switch to the superior editor instead /j
Only the NPM package from FMTK will work with emacs, the rest of it is for vscode only.
Besides, this thing, which might be a close competitor to FMTK, hasn't released yet.
I don't think that this tries to compete with FMTK. It looks like something trying to do something weird in Emacs just for the fun of it. And that's a good enough reason for it to be the way it is.
