#I have disabled link embeds in this

I'm just a lurker as far as this channel goes, but for me, being able to see the current state of development and popularity of a mod was part of the value I got from the channel - it allowed me to see the portal description and whether a mod is brand new or has been under development for awhile.

Removing embeds makes this channel almost pointless for my specific use case, since now I get less information than I would if I was using the mod portal to browse. Clicking every link in the channel isn't really a viable alternative.

I'm posting this because I assume that I'm not the only one who used this channel in that manner

The main goal of the channel was to create a space where people can show off the work they're currently doing on their mods, and honestly I feel that the mod link embeds have created a combination of obscuring that content as well as turning this channel more into a "check out this mod I just released" channel, a role which #mod-updates already fulfills

Mod updates doesn't include the blurb from the modder, which was part of the draw for this channel (to me at least). Basically an elevator pitch for mods

#

Which is fine if that's not the intended goal, but I figured I'd voice an alternative point of view before just muting the channel, in case this wasn't considered

Personally I don't really follow #mod-updates since every single patch shows up in there while this channel has more concrete update show cases. e.g. "look at this cool thing I've made/am working on".

I would like to point out that more often than not the mod portal embed is cached and almost always inaccurate

#

#mod-dev-showcase has always supposed to have been about showing off actual stuff that you're working on, not just being a second slightly more detailed #mod-updates

oh embeds are disabled, duh

#

go around has been 8 seconds ago with no downloads for more than a week apparently

yeah true

@sudden violet give it some time, there really aren't that many posts and clicking a link if you're curious isn't super bad

#

and I'm sorry that your main use case is being hindered

It's more a matter of if I'm going to be actively browsing then I might as well just do it on the mod portal. And while the cached values could be wrong, it still gave a general idea of whether someone is saying they're advertising a new awesome extremely complicated feature for a mod that has existed for a year or two vs someone who just had the idea and is just getting started with a brand new mod

#

Take that nauvi-tea mod for example. That blurb doesn't actually tell me anything about what the mod is. I can kind of guess from the name but that's not always a given, and not every modder adds a description of the mod to the blurb (and in the case of mods that are just adding new features, adding a description for the whole mod when showcasing a specific feature might not be appropriate anyway). So without the embed, people who aren't already familiar with the mod don't know if the showcase is related to a new feature for a mod that does other things, or if the feature is the mod

#

people also say that kind of thing in their post though

#

just taking some recent examples, people are usually pretty good about describing what they're doing
"I am very proud (and a little nervous) to introduce a huge update to trainsaver, my train screensaver mod. "
"I am working on an addon to Maraxsis"
"We're approaching two years after I first released graphics for my canal excavator mod, but now finally I've made remnants, ground integration and frozen graphics"
"aquilo Better Aquilo 2.0 is out aquilo"

#

the tea mod is a pretty bad example, most posts aren't like that

sudden violet
#

Maraxsis is a good example. As someone who mostly plays overhauls, I had never heard of it before now. Their post informs me of the new features but the mod description gives the context for someone who was unfamiliar with the mod regarding what it is ¯_(ツ)_/¯

#

I have no idea how discord unfurls embeds and whether webhooks have control over the style of embed, but I wonder if it's possible to make it only display the description? I know that wowhead's bot for example does embeds differently from how a user-linked embed looks

#

And I know that this sounds like me telling you to "do more work to make the thing I want", but it's not. I'm just offering suggestions in case preserving the use case I highlighted is something you guys want to do

#

At the end of the day it's not the end of the world if I end up shifting my mod discoverability to the mod portal

craggy sage
#

we cannot control how the embed appears, that's all handled by the mod portal itself

Bots can have custom embeds because they provide the entire embed themselves

+mod maraxis | just like this bot

Dive into the uncharted waters of Maraxsis, a world where the sea covers everything. Utilize submarines to explore, craft advanced fluids inside the hydro plant, build pressure domes, and master the challenges of deep-sea logistics.

Maraxsis is a polished and complete mod that minimally effects the vanilla game, so is easy to include in existing saves.
