#How do I get one thing on both belts, while the other only on one?

you can put a filtered splitter on that bottom path, filtering iron plate to the very bottom lane
otherwise you can use a hood
is a filtered splitter different from a regular one?
no, place a normal one, open it's UI
there's an option to put a filter
third option: don't put iron plates down below at all, use a long handed to reach the top belt of plate
I've been trying the options there, but I don't understand how the filter works, with the 3 options and left/right and priority stuff.
the long handed is a good idea, I didn't think of that
you'll want to learn how to use the splitter for later, whichever option you choose
try placing one to the side
the configuration you'd want for your image was
unset input priority
right output priority
filter: iron plate
Thanks! I swear I went through all the options when I was trying 🤷.
I'll note
that splitter + inserter thing you have after the furnace stack is not doing anything for ya
yes it is. it switches the lanes
which could/should be done with a sideload instead
and that sideload is already there, for the bottom inserter
what is sideload? I copied this design originally, but removed the top part because I didn't see it doing anything, and one inserter was leaving an empty spot between plates.
Using inserters in your belts is generally a bad idea
+faq sideload | sideloading is having one belt go into the side of another, it will push all the items into one lane
oh. thats cool
theres so many terms and tech I don't know yet
I ended up using a inserter with a filter for my problem up above, the splitter settings seemed to work, but I came back later and it wasn't 🤷. Eventually I'll redesign it somehow to move the issues somewhere with more space.
Your problem needs two splitters:
First you split the mixed belt into two, then you have a second one on one of the outputs to filter it
I'll be real
doing this is useless 99.9999% of the time
inserters can grab from both sides of the belt anyway
don't belt to belt with inserters
theres better ways that don't require power and have significantly higher thoughput
