Is it intentional that moons are connected to other planets, rather than just connecting them to their own planet and having purely planet-to-planet connections?

It’s intentional. Could go either way on this one.

The tricky part with treating moons like any other planet is that they blend in on the space map, so visually the distinction between planets and moons is lost.

I think any connections crossing the ray going north from the star are actually drawn the long way around, but their drawing precision is low so they look ugly.
