Is the left design generally more favorable than the right?

I'm a new player who was looking for some inspiration and common design patterns in factorio.school
I very often see the left design used instead of right design. They both seem to do the same thing except the left one is 1 tile "wider", has easier construction, and same inserter speed for the input (two long-hands).

uh why would you ever use left one?

#

red inserter throughput is lower than other fast inserter

yeah i guess, not really familiar with speedrun strat myself. but raw throughput wise, its terrible

it might not matter, depending on the recipe

hmm, bigger footprint, lower throughput, more inserter active timing, not upgradable inserter, and almost all left design can be converted into right one. the only plus so far is faster build as ArcDM said

sounds all around terrible for me, at least thats from general playthrough perspective

and is less space effecient

they like to be braided like the bad belts they are

you also unlock long insrters before fast inserters

you can easily draw third belt with that gonna go underground between inserters. that way you gonna be able to have variance of 6 items and use it for building whatever stuff like miners/factories/chemical plants/etc that doesn't require a lot of passtrough and eventually buffers up

in many speedruns even the output inserter will be red so you can just drag them all at once

soft kettle
#

You can just add another row of red inserters per machine to the left one to increase throughput

#

Less optimal? Maybe. Does it actually matter? Pretty much never, frankly

As has been mentioned, it’s just faster to hand-build and allows a 3rd belt input (not that it even happens for assemblers)
