I have a few questions:
How much busywork is involved?
Does this mod change anything outside of the earlygame? It'd feel like the sort of mod that doesn't really add much to a greater modpack, and be forgotten about early into a run without really impacting a run outside of lengthening the earlygame. Although a longer earlygame is fine, as long as it has a point, and when the entire mod only affects the earlygame, there isn't much point. I do however acknowledge that overhauls tend to make the earlygame longer, but their earlygames have a point in getting them in a mindset (except for Bob's and Angel's Steam Science Busywork, that one has no point)

I have to see where it goes. Currently, there is no need to look back after leaving. The lumber mill has no use on other planets. But it's early in the development and I might come up with ideas to make the moon relevant for the other planets. I don't know, what exactly you mean by "busywork". There is automation pretty soon, so no hand feeding quite early. Although you need to deal with fueling burner entities. This is intended for people who like the early game (as I do). It could be, that it won't be your thing.

by busywork, I mean the time where it's a better idea to transport everything by hand instead of having that handled automatically. In the base game, it's basically the time before you make your furnace stack

I would say it's similar here. You craft 20 science by hand and then you can start automating. Of course you need to gather some wood manually to craft the first buildings by hand to get going.

I have one idea, but I think that should not be the main reason. I'll have to think about it. New ideas are coming while I progress so let's be patient.

@heady hornet Small heads up - I'm in the process of updating the lumber mill to 8x8 or even 9x9 because the graphic detail is too complex for 7x7 and also overhauling the overall look to match Factorio universe better. (and aslo adding the icon)

You mean the agricultural tower? I generally buffed wood production a bit to make it viable as an replacement for iron.

But I'm nowhere near balancing this whole thing. I need a few weeks just to create an overall feeling of the whole progression.

These 8 towers currently produce maybe 2.5 or 3 wood/s. I don't know if that's good because there isn't yet much you can do with it. The thing that is always a bit tricky with wood and burner machines is to prevent the precious wood being used as fuel.

You could also maybe change the fuel value if you really dont want the player to use the wood as fuel

That's currently kind of a problem. The game currently doesn't prioritize the good fuel over wood. I also had to remove fuel value from the seeds because it would hurt a lot to loose them accidentally. I don't want to remove fuel value from wood because you probably still want to burn it on other planets.

I thought in 1.1 the game would try to keep the same fuel type in the fuel slot by refilling before the last item is burned. Now it waits until the fuel slot is empty to refill and then wood gets refilled instead of the better fuel. Maybe that was a modded behavior by SE. I need to check that.

How does one excidentally burn something I wonder? Ah I suppose maybe with that mod that allows dragging stuff into containers or smth

Well, a burner lumber mill processes wood as ingredient for the recipe. But it also needs fuel. If there is a better fuel than wood, it should not use wood as fuel.

Especially if the other fuel has no other use and wood is used for building stuff and for science.

Well, sometimes you can't see the forest for the trees. Fuel categories is the obvious solution. But that was too easy ๐Ÿ˜„
