That train route would hit 3 large oil fields, which is what I'm trying to get at.
it isn't as large of an area as you might think to set up defenses around, do you have construction bots? you can easily create blueprints for horizontal \ vertical defensive barriers and paste them everywhere. i prefer to rely a lot on flamer turrets since you can easily supply them by running a single pipeline to the walls
I have construction bot tech, but not many of them yet and they are still quite slow.
you can create one defensive setup then copy it as a giant blueprint straight from the map and paste it back onto the map
then walk around and let bots build
Can flame turrets handle evolution level 1 on their own?
heres what i do, 2-3 thick wall, then the flamer turrets as far away as possible just hitting the other side of the wall, some turrets a bit further in, they dont se emuch action and dont really run out of ammo even though im not supplying them, its ok if some walls break here and there, biters still will get obliterated if they try to get through
i do a wall like this with turrets behind it belt behind that then flames. the turrets don't usually get to shoot. mind you, you'd need some repair kits there. but still
Needing repair kits increases the complexity a lot beyond "just a pipeline".
i mean.. throw a roboport in there with a chest full of repair kits and the oil field will run out before the repair kits
i figured you just wanted a square of walls around the pumps. with a train depot and some defenses. and that's all you'd really need. train comes in through gate. and all you have connecting it and your base is a train line
i have basically 3 walls up north, a few down below including some that are just simple turrets, the thing with setting up defenses like this far outside the pollution cloud is biters wont really be aggressive, it takes some work clearing out the nests to begin with, but all i really get is expansion biters heading out so the all the defenses do is prevent them from encroaching back
and i just need to run oil pipe + electricity for radars to the defenses, no bother with roboports, this is handling behemoth biters and spitters just fine
Yes, this is what I would like, but the track itself would be undefended.
biters don't attack tracks do they? i guess i always figured they didn't
"Sometimes" is the most detailed answer I have been able to get on the subject.
No one seems to know what causes them to do so, and it is quite rare, but it does happen "sometimes".
And I assume that if they expand next to the track they'll attack it, at the least.
but i mean. i suppose you could put roboport on a train and put some basic supplies in a car being pulled so the train autorepairs?
anyway my recommendation is still to just carve out a safe area for yourself and set up a proper perimeter, it takes a bit more time investment but basically you don't need to worry about enemies after that, ive been away building on vulcanus for 20 hours and nauvis has been fine

I think that is a mod.
just really take advantage of bots for it, its a lot quicker to build the giant defensive blueprints after nuclear personal fusion
otherwise bots will just run out of charge running around
