you can feed the belt into a splitter and filter one side to be gears

you don't need a filter on the splitter for this though. just point the underground the right way
I use this technique constantly, especially with recipes that have three ingredients
third ingredient on the inner lane, output final product to the far lane, block the ingredient with a side load onto an underground
Are undergroundies better for UPS? OPs case still needs a splitter to access both lanes.
Yes. Super nice to use when you put the output on the same belt (but other side) than the input of a belt for compact designs. Also useful when you want to put an item on the other size of a belt. But since this case requires a splitter anyways, it doesn't matter too much.
But splitter filters were added a bit later in the game, hence many people are still used to the splitter into underground method for filtering. It kinda stuck around.

I don't want to derail this into a UPS thread, but yes if UPS is a concern then you should be working hard to delete all splitters
what's not clear to me is what problem is OP trying to solve
