In my opinion, this cartoony feel come from the transition with the ground. It feel it is magically on the ground and not **in ** the ground.
these aren't the droids you're looking for
Maybe it's because vanilla has more industrial things? More pipes, cracks, pop-rivet panels, vents, etc. But I'm not artist, just thinking out loud 😄
That building looks cool though
Due to the color, it looks like it could be clay/daub construction instead of metal like most vanilla machines. It's also big enough that it's more of a building than a machine. The incidence angles also wouldn't be the same in real life - machines being similar sizes helps hide this in vanilla, but the discordance is more pronounced with such a large size difference.
the shape being tapered is by design due to factorios perspective so sides were visible
That did come across well for me.
same reason I opted for the corners to be beveled
I wonder how much of the factorio "look" depends on a lot of detail. I was looking at the upcoming space platform hub for an example of a larger building and it is covered in small details.
one issue I see with this is how the dirt mask just cuts off abruptly in a lot of places
its very apparent dirt and then it just stops
a steampunk reskin for the game is a fun idea
IR3? :D
I feel like there's to much rust on the building
can't please everyone ig lmfao
think this will do
Looks really good!
But regarding your point about it not feeling vanilla; I think the bumpmap is a bit too detailed compared to vanilla objects.
You have a very high amount of noise in the shadows of the front face (south) which vanilla sprites don't really have.
Furthermore, the rust stains on the right roof seem a bit to random/splattered on instead of accumulating near a certain edge or object.
If you compare that with the front face of vanilla's assemblers, there the rust is clearly coming from the edges of each individual panel.
