#New player need help

Broadly speaking if you're not sure what to do next look in the research tree for whatever the next science is, then work towards making it.
Seems like you need to start making Chemical Science
next.
That's familiar haha
If you're playing with biters, automating some military science, grenades, and damage upgrades before getting oil is an option
Yeah Nilaus makes good stuff
But what you need after green science is pump jacks and oil
The big thing is definitely oil, it's the primary ingredient of chemical science
so do I go up or down?
Looks like the oil to the SE is closest.
Both are close enough to run a pipe so you should be good in that regard, just keep in mind you need to keep the biters off of it
I am aware
it used to be much worse but I've cleared plenty
if I recall, 9
Ok but how do I add military science to the system?
I'm assuming more than this then
Oh, I missed those. But yes, probably more than that.
should I make like a separate farm? With 24 furnaces?
Could do. Just be aware that each furnace making steel eats the output of one furnace making iron. So don't choke your iron supply by diverting all of it to steel.
Handful of steel furnaces is enough for getting started: https://katiska.cc/n/temp/factorio/screenshots/bootstrap/00-red-green-black-starter.png
I would also think about upgrading your stone furnaces to steel furnaces, which work twice as quickly for the same amount of coal.
Since you have green science you should be able to access those.
don't they polute way more however?
Nope they pollute less
Technically they pollute less because you need to mine less coal for the same output
Oh cool!
Also what are those like green red and yellow signals?
The pollution from the furnace itself is also doubled, which means it's the same pollution per unit smelted. But, yes, the reduction in coal means less pollution overall.
Added by bottleneck-mod, red=missing resources, yellow=stopped because output full etc
ok so I need a place to automate steel furnaces, red ammo, and stone walls and make military tech thingies?
what else am I missing?
Stockpile some pipes and underground pipes if you aren't already. You'll need them once you start messing with oil.
One tip is that use red ammo only for making military science and defender bots.
Red ammo in gun turrets is kinda bad, but defenders are great
Red ammo in turrets is certainly more effective than the basic ammo. It's just a lot more expensive.
It can be worth doing if you've started getting medium biters.
Yeah I understood what they meant
Ok so how should I do this?
I need a place to get pipes, both types, a place for red ammo, walls, and grenades, as well as engines
also more metal bars
Walls just come from bricks, so that's easy, you can do that off to the side wherever.
and probably steel furnaces
It's better to use those magazines to make damage upgrades. Problem with using red ammo in turrets is that it spawns a lot more extra biters
does this work?
I think the main problem with this layout is that it's a bit cramped.
A single wall assembler will probably be plenty. They're quick to craft.
oh
You've got two stacks of iron furnaces going, but you've only really got one belt of iron that's managed to escape to where new production can access it.
So I think I'd put some thought into how you can get your resources out to where you can use them to build all this new stuff you need to build.
If you're talking about sending ore to a third stack of furnaces, then maybe, sure.
well that or
I can redesign HOW I get steel bars
and only use two as well
like work from here
how about this?
bad pic
Tried this as well before heading to bed, getting close to 4 AM
I'm just gonna post this before heading off to show what I've done and if anyone has any ideas for me, then to feel free to add them
Here's a good tip: Don't be afraid go put more space in between your different Factories, in the event you need to increase the size of or route belts past your factories
It all looks nice and neat, but you're certainly going to run into logistics problems
pro tip: just play and don't fear mistakes, you'll find yourself playing on many different saves with different goals which will be your choice, whether you launch a rocket or 10, test stuff in the map editor, use mods, speedrun, play different game modes or scenarios, etc.
does anyone mind playing a game with me, later today, to teach me things?
i think that's a way better way to learn, and more fun.
Also looking at some speedruns will tell you the minimum you need to do to launch rocket
Normally, when I play I speedrun to construction bots and mines as soon as possible and after that do what ever I want ๐

I'm not saying that you should speedrun if that's not something you enjoy.
But knowing what kind of designs are fast to build and efficient is useful.
๐
You better look for 100% rather then default settings as they are more optimized for endgame which you certainly want
100% games are much more complex and use blueprints, which makes them harder to follow when you're starting
Biggest hurdle when you're new is how to get bots, and speedruns show you how to get them fast ๐
Ok now I'm confused
This is actually significantly difficult to follow, even for veteran players. This requires very minimal mistakes.
That's a more dangerous early game and with 24 burner miners burning coal. That, in a random map, is enough pollution to immediately trigger biters at the 15 minute mark or less.
Honestly I'm down, but what version are you on?
Well I'm vanilla
I haven't added any mods
No, the factorio version, the 1.1.x thing.
My bad
Ah, I wish I could have helped.
somthing's wrong, ain't it?
Pro players are playing on latest experimental rather then stable game version
It's a bit risky but may have a few bugfixes for bugs people barely ever seen
ok so I am not stupid then
So if they really want they can just switch the version in steam and wait for a minute

100% have some things better then any%, because they have to be Lazy Bastard which is very important for you
