Just finished my first play through and I’ve done the same thing everyone else does lol. I took the time to learn everything I could about train networks with segments and stops with multiple trains on the same track and same goes with the logistic robots. I can see how I could demolish the bus with these tools and make something more segmented or “megabase” like but I can’t seem to figure it out early game. Anyone got any tips?
#Main bus sucks

Throughout the entire game of Factorio, you're bootstrapping; ie, you're building a factory to enable you to build a factory. In the early-game, this is in the form of mining drills and furnaces. Later on, you might build a mall that provides necessary parts: intermediate materials like gears and circuits, or even assembly machines and belts and all. In a more indirect sense, you also make science, which unlocks new technologies for your base.
In this manner, the early game might revolve around a starter base: a base that can jumpstart the construction of your megabase. In fact, it's my opinion that a good starter base is necessary to start making a proper megabase.
In other words: construct your starter base with an eye to get blue science with it. Then, use blue science to get bots and construct the start of your megabase off to the side. Finally, once your megabase is self-sustaining and your starter base is no longer useful, deconstruct it (or perhaps leave it as a monument to the past)
for me, if you're playing vanilla, to build a mega base at least you need to unlock beacon and tier 3 modules + decent base supplying materials for the buildings you gonna build
to reach that point you'd need a good base, which main bus will give you good time on that
modules maker aren't necessary to put into starting base, as this will make the bus a bit more wider
big module build will do better on rails
I never understand demolish mindset. Build your main bus to be able to construct your proper megabase well. It's exactly as @robust drum put it, you're just bootstrapping. Once you've built the new base, sure, consider deconstruction, but for now focus on the base to build your base, not the end base.
I would say they aim for the minimalistic buildset like having one location for it . but it gets quickly devoured into a destructive mindset, where they first destroy before building up into a new form. without having a new way of making it, making it harder to progress because you end up handcrafting a bit.
my tip is same as exfret, build up the base first, before destroying the old base.
I may be not very efficient, but I've gone through a starter base without a bus. Built a mall and combined red&green science production with only plates on the input. After unlocking trains (and all research that only needs red/green packs), made a janky blue science production, unlocked bots and started working on a train base
main bus is very comfortable for multiplayer.
main bus can feel like very much a waste of time in single player, but then again, bot's soon.
comfort of looking at the bus and seeing what's running short real time.
train base players gotta dabble in some circuitry to get a good look at the bottleneck.
factory must grow eitherway.
There's a lot of different organizational techniques
