#Omarchy Installing on an SSD
122 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
Well, just install Omarchy onto the ssd normally, you shouldn't use a vm for that because that will just become wonky
But what do you mean "from another laptop"
Like inserting the ssd into the other laptop?
basically, I have a laptop where I wanted to dual boot
I found out that ain't possible
It is possible, wdym
I had the idea that I'll install to an external ssd
Ah
omarchy takes up the whole drive, can't just partition so I still have windows
my laptop only has a single ssd
1tb
I need windows for school and my music shi
Alright, you can partition out like 500GB or how ever much you want for Omarchy then follow a guide that I can give you if you want to partition it using the arch iso
but then I have to do everything else for it to become omarchy?
You can unallocate a portion of the window installation (there is no danger)
like, the whole shabang
One sec
aight
https://learn.omacom.io/2/the-omarchy-manual/96/manual-installation https://github.com/basecamp/omarchy/discussions/1651
These two links will explain every step
sigh
I'm dumb for this
I'll fuck sum up
are you 100% sure that theres no other way?
Well, the only risk is if you accidentally select the wrong partition i.e the windows one
Well, not in this case
But you can install it onto the external ssd if you want
The only thing that I can think of that can get complicated with that is that the bios can get confused because the bootloader will be gone so you would need to fix the boot order every time you pull it out
Yeah
I'm just really scared I'll format sum I shouldn't
There is always a risk
the whole "omarchy uses the whole drive" scares the shi out of me
Well, that is if you use the omarchy iso
I've spoken about wanting to create a menu where you can allocate manually so you don't need the arch iso
But I haven't written it yet and I would have to get it merged lmao
Long process
well, I think you should
many people dualboot
u would be praised
ofc only do it if ur unemployed
A lot of distros use calemares for their installation process which already supports manual allocation but, Omarchy decided to create their own installation software
I'm not
Ay, it is good to learn stuff at any age
yeahhh
I always had an interest in computers
in school I'm the IT guy
they always call me, not the teacher
I've used Linux since I was 7 i.e since 2013, (may be a bit autistic 💀)
nahhhh, I'm proud of u
Im experimenting from like
2023-24
fedora
KDE neon
once tried to install arch
I had suicidal thoughts from it
:3
Damn, I spent my first years on slackware which was a big teaching moment
actually, I have an idea on why it ain't working
ion know it
didn't run it as administratir
Ah
it could still shit itself
wanna watch me try to install?
call, share screen
I won't talk tho, parents
kms
it did the same
😭
I mean, does it just error out?
Also, I just saw that you just asked Matt for help lmao, don't do that. Bro will just be rude to you
Yeah, he has me blocked so I usually just advise people to not even interact with him
I mean, I don't really know other than just saying to install it using the iso on a usb drive and installing it onto the ssd that way
look, ik im askin for much, but can you hop on a call so i can show u my configuration
I am currently in a call so I can't really
aaaa
alr
one more question
u know rufus
my USB didn't boot
it said to remake it in mbr
can i?
Yeah, it was a while ago I last used rufus, but I think there is like a button where you press if you want uefi or not and in this case you don't want it because that would make it GPT
ye ik how
its just, ion rly know what it means
didnt know if it messes w omarchy
Well, MBR supports older hardware and is the standard for isos and stuff
kk
Though, for paritioning of drives it is GPT
well
uhh
sure
ngl i would trust u w my life atp
so
thx 👍
Ill see if it works
umm, I mean, it's fuctional
happened to me in installers before tho
okay, the installer started
like, the actual installing part
erm interesting
Good job
