#Bullet Heaven Masterlist

To their credit, they actually fired the artist.
Apparently they had hired them for the actual art in their portfolio, and hadn't noticed that it was a bait & switch.
oh. neat.
That's always fun
Oof. That had to smart.
I'd hate to pay someone for actual art and just get some subpar AI art instead. I'd ask for all the money back.
Oh yeah. I'd be livid.
Game companies aren't prepared for the level of scams & scummery that AI's going to unleash on them over the next decade.
Asset stores? Total minefields.
Artists? Possibly robots.
My favorite bullet heaven thankfully uses all real art. The artist is always teasing us with samples of upcoming bits from the game.
Which one?
You can see them working in Asperite all the time.
The game is Mobmania and the artist goes by copun on the Discord and AznDesserts on Steam I think.
Huh, hadn't seen that one before.
huh thats a cute lil game
Yeah, it's a little known game, but super fun.
After I fix my PC or get a new PC I'll probably get back to playing it. I've been taking a break from gaming in part due to needing and wanting a break and due to PC issues.
seems like good ol generic bullet heaven fun. cool.
and 4 player coop
now theres something you dont see every day
The coop is super fun as well.
well, Ill wishlist that and if I ever have spare steam bucks I think I know where they're going
And it's mainly designed for the coop as well, but still playable in single player.
I've even shared a few ideas with the devs that have made it into the game as well which is super cool.
awesome!

It is, just a really weird one.
Somehow neither of his previous games have been mentioned here before, but it's worth mentioning that Terry Brash, the developer of Tiny Survivors and Gunrun, is currently under fire for heavy plagiarism in their latest game Wildcard

I found a new one while browsing called Karate Survivors, which seems to actually introduce some new and unique ideas. Things like a greater focus on using the environment to take out enemies, picking up weapons off the floor, kicking boxes or shopping carts into people, knocking over shelves and scaffolding to crush enemies with their contents.
Which is why it hurts so much to see the splash artwork look so AI generated.

Also Halls of Torment hit 1.0 this week
This is stinky. I love Halls of Torment and am kinda baffled as to why they'd use AI for their 1.0 promo images.
I sent a DM to the developer to see if it was their publisher going rogue.
Ooh, yeah, there is something wrong with those ribcages. And the giant metal block on the guy's right forearm...
thats really wierd choice for them since all their previous art seems to be in line with the retro diablo1/2 art style :\
Yeah, it doesn't match at all.
I think someone publisher-side went all-in on generic fantasy art for promo images to try and stand out on mobile storefronts.
yeah now that you mention mobile it does look like very generic mobile mmo style art, i guess their mobile publisher is pushing to use that art even though theyre independent on pc ? i havent played alot of HOT recently but is there even a dragon in the game lol ?
Not to my knowledge.
Got a confirmation from the developer: the publisher went rogue and used AI images without their permission.
Ahhh that sucks but atleast there was no bad intent on the devs side, hopefully they can get it all removed
so infuriating
is the publisher erabit ?
Yup
This isn't the first time I've had Erabit try to sneak AI into a game they want me to cover, so it's nice to finally get a confirmation that they suck.
Previously they claimed it was an accident, but in Halls of Torment's case the dev specifically told them that using the AI character art was a bad idea and they did it anyway.
damn, i was actually considering them for mobile publishing after reaching 1.0 since they helped me out early on with translation stuff but that seems like a really bad idea now... AI art is bad enough but then straight up ignoring the devs and using it anyway seems like it would be something that breaks their contract lol
It's definitely disingenuous, even if you can't prove malice.
That arm is just going so many directions like it was broken severely and never set properly or has too many joints. The dude also seems to have no hand; just suddenly sword, as if it is also part of the malformed arm.

It's okay.
I might make a video on it, but the gameplay just didn't grab me.
Vampire Hunters at least has the benefit of funny infinite scaling on weapons, and then also potentially dozens of weapons all at once.
Bloodshed only lets you wield one primary weapon at a time, plus spells that fire at set intervals.
But they all have static level scaling, so the actual stat min-maxing is bare minimum.

Genuinely one of the best bullet heavens I've ever played.
The sheer amount of things you can do is absurd.
It's not technically one, but I think it shares enough of its style to count
So I sent the dev of Talented a message a few days ago asking about whether or not the thumbnail was generated with AI. They have yet to respond to me, so I can only assume that it's not legit.
If they get back to me, I'll let you know, but the key art looks kinda sus to me (the quiver is especially weird looking), so I can't trust it implicitly.

Didn't expect Hand of Fate to make a comeback
Huh, I thought they shut down
They did shut down, but I guess they formed a new studio and reacquired the license
Wrong thread sorry
Played this
Holy peak
It feels quite unique with lots of different playstyles and quirks
Reminds me a bit of an ARPG combined with Crafty Survivors
There's one character that recruits enemy units by dealing psychic damage, it plays almost like an RTS
There's a fire one that has great spells with high mana costs, while also having synergy with itself by gaining back mana on the ashes left of whatever you burn, which means that you gotta keep the flames spreading to continue your rampage. I obliterated the hobbit and forest level but found myself in a rather precarious position on the dwarven mines, which don't have a lot of flammable material and thus I had to adjust by playing more cautiously and taking advantage of chokepoints.

I feel like Wander had a vid for Fantasy Survivors, but I just did a few runs today with a random and a friendo and it feels decent. Much to unlock yet but a good short run w/friends thing so far
Oh no?
Dorfing on the go
rip batteries mostly
you didnt need those batteries anyways. feed them to molly.
What's quite nuts. Megabonk online is peaking right now at 51.924 as currently 33 place of highest online total in steam.
Did some one VERY popular covered it?
But looking at charts....it's just grows every day
I know Charlie Moistcritikal played it, maybe that had something to do with it
I know at least 3 folks in wholesomeverse covered it and 2 other YouTubers I watch that are not quite as popular as well. I hope it's spread keeps growing, while I haven't played it it looks fun and has a neat jank between 3d and movement in the world that I appreciate
Still numbers are insane
Very glad to dev honestly
Solo dev and self published
And it took just year?
But Megabonk is sorta breath of freshair in bullet heavens. Whem last time we had something with not heavy meta shop? Simple more rerolls-banishes-skip and item poll control before run.
It's just everything just MUUUUST have meta shop. It's getting a bit boring already.
And meta shop in case of stats up and stuff like what
It's was bold move to not do what. And it worked out
Simply inrun rng - map gen rng - you decide how you move around.
Does anybody else play DRG:S with a controller? It keeps freaking out on me and doing some kind of weird delayed input lag
Not me fore sure.
ANything on steam forums?
Well i see some stuff. For some it works for some it was fixed at last patch fix
Yeah I didn't have it till a couple days ago
Stuff I'm seeing is for other issues but disabling steam input seems to be the fix

A Hunter X Hunter themed bullet heaven game for mobile devices got announced today.
That's all I got to say about that.
Nice.
I have no idea how this would work in board game form.
....... that sounds like a horrid idea.
Guess I'll find out.
fair enough.
I do kinda wish the game had some sort of TTS demo, because without any actual gameplay footage and only one five-minute video going over the rules it's hard to fully wrap my head around
It looks like a wave survival deckbuilder, kinda.
Hmm, I think I'll end up passing
Grey Fox seems like they tend to make 6.5-7.5/10 games
Well online coop in Vamp Surv is solid
also the new balatro map was like
"What if we added a pack opening roguelite to your survivors game?"
no litteraly cards what have star rarity and can be foiled and like a planty more modifiers
And it's free
like the whole base game roster and maybe the new balatro dlc characters all have cards with at least 3 star ratings along with foils, inverted, galaxy, and some other effect
wack. but nice.
Saw the newsletter a week or so ago
Seems pretty interesting, like a spatial puzzle almost as you have to maneuver both to avoid the enemies and line up your attacks
I think it could be a neat interpretation, a lot of the game (specially early on and without all the meta progression) or even the genre as a whole can be about navigating the swarms of enemies
not to say thats a bad game, that sounds like an interesting game.
Im just not sure why its branded as vampire survivors.
besides of course borrowed brand recognition
I'm not sure how it'll do the overpowered progression or the evolutions though
It mentions something about unlocks on the reaper image.
“Unlocking”
It’s…. It’s a board game. There…. It’s all there from the start.
What are they on about
Legacy games are a thing?
I might have to check this out
It's a very well established concept at this point
A thing that I’ve never really quite understood why it’s a thing.
Another thing is that the game board feels a bit small all things considered, so will it probably be either enemies requiring more hits or gimmicks around them. I think a big issue it'll have to deal with is that the game it's drawing inspiration from is about having a lot of enemies, but having a lot of components in a physical game board is notorious for being fiddly and difficult
Okay it’s. In vampire survivors the game physically prevents you from playing with everything from the start.
A board game has everything there. All the pieces came in the box. All the cards are here. Why should I have to “unlock” or “earn” the ability to play with more of the board game? If it’s here physically and I have it….
I dunno. It’s probably a mental thing. Unlocking in video games feels like a normal thing to me but in board games it feels weird.
I think it opens up a lot of design space, seen a lot of games that make great use of it. Dorfromantik for example has some components that you have to unlock by completing challenges, both being a reward for your effort and a way of progressively making the game more complex
Other games like ISS Vanguard can provide a changing narrative with unexpected surprises and a feel of progression, closer to a ttrpg adventure in a way
Given the nature of this game, I think Vampire Survivors will lean towards the former
It's a tricky thing to design, which is why not a lot of boardgames attempt such mechanics
Of course there are also some campaign/legacy games like Gloomhaven or Pandemic Legacy which involve the permanent alteration or destruction of components (most often with stickers), those I'm not particularly fond of since there's certain permanence to it (You can't just repackage everything to do it all again or give to someone)
As to what purpose they serve in this game, personally I think it's more for adaptation purposes and some replayability
Hmm ok this seems pretty faithful adaption.
I do think simultainous turns would work better than sequental turns
The closest I get to it, is that in The War For North Africa you can research benefits that help you in the game. But that’s a game mechanic, researching and getting something for that one play session.
A true “meta unlock” I mean. The only way to really properly do that in my head is to have people send in their ending board states and then mail out the “unlocks” because again. The box is all there. It’s not a TTRPG like gloomhaven (yes I consider that a TTRPG).
It just feels weird. Like it’s mimicking what worked in another format to attempt to cling to faithfulness, rather than explore the board game space to try something new.
Things are made in specific media to take advantage of it, trying to perfectly 1:1 something in a new medium is almost always going to end up as a worse product rather than using the essence as guidence to do something new.
I’m probably just being weird. I dunno.
I need to see if charterstone still exists anywhere. Legacy game where you build up a town and every session you play on a board you've added to and whatnot. My lgs mentioned it and when I finally had money and wanted it, twas gone
funky.
Thing about board games is, once they're in your house they're yours in every sense of the word. You could open up every secret pack immediately if you felt like it, or you can go by the honor system and save each pack until it's time to use them. Sometimes the legacy system is used to ease people slowly into the rules of a game and the general loop before introducing more complex ideas.
The only legacy games I don't like are the ones that ask you to permanently change the pieces. Sealed packs can always be resealed, but if the game tells you to rip up the cards, or mark them with stickers? I don't care if the game is built to be played over a dozen or a hundred campaigns, it's still a game I can only play once.
yeah thats fair. I also agree on the permenant damage point
hate when my stuff asks me to break it
but otherwise.... yeah. fair enough.

was thinking this looks like it straight cloned vampire survivors
good reason for that
Developed by Auroch Digital (Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun) in partnership with Warhammer and poncle (Vampire Survivors), discover the universes of Warhammer 40,000 and Warhammer: Age of Sigmar in all its pixel glory in this new surviv-a-ton.
GW didn't want it to just be a DLC/Update to VS, so they had poncle make an entire new game for it.
Huh never knew VS is own baked engine
A lot of indie devs that make unique genres tend to end up making custom engines.
Due to needing specific features.
I believe it came about a year after the game originally launched, they originally made the game with the Phaser JavaScript engine
The game exploded in popularity and then they made the mobile version in a new one, updating the main game when the second DLC released
Or it might have been when local coop released
As far as I know VS is currently using Unity, so for this Warhammer Survivors the probably just took the Unity project of VS and started reskinning it
That's a lot of money saved; reskinning doesn't take much, and they perhaps added a few minor features to make it look more legit
Ninja Kiwi specifically going after those "No Monkey" Challenge Runs that heavily rely on the Tack Shooter not having a visible monkey.

That knight on the embed's trailer thumbnail feels a bit sus (in the AI way).
I know stolen realm uses asset packs, that might be it?
need to check the page again
well that is new :/
Is this a different game from "Stolen Realm Survivors"? Because I'm not seeing an AI disclaimer on SRS's page.
yea previous game
Though again, that knight just feels sus.
It's vibes are off and I can't place exactly why.
There's no obvious indicator of it being an AI generated knight, but it just feels off.
They’ve used it in the past, so they could easily be using it again without a disclosure.
Yes...so be cautious about it pretty much
But Song of Conquest devs they BH spin looks...intersting

Yeah, level design!
That's my #1 wishlist thing for a Bullet Heaven, and I'm so glad DMD is trying to pioneer it.
Coool
Okay, so apparently the Postal bullet heaven game is suspected of using AI art
gad damnit
It looks like they licensed the IP out to a different studio, like they did with Brain Damaged, so at least RWS didn't do anything wrong besides not looking closely enough
Here, I know exactly how to make it up to everyone

Okay, that's cool.
As an update, Running With Scissors announced they terminated the Bullet Paradise title following the AI allegations
The organizers of the steam bullet heaven festival are also running a poll to decide on an official steam tag for the genre

Steam has a huge influence on how game genres are defined — and this fast-growing genre still doesn’t have a proper tag.
A Steam tag isn’t just for looks; it’s one of the most powerful tools for discoverability and for helping players find exactly what they love.
🏷️A dedicated tag would:

Got 7k+ votes in. Maybe this time something will happen :) I personally love Bullet Heaven as tag
It's upsetting, I was so close to adding this one to the suggestions channel, but they used AI in the trailer voiceover of all things
Neat looking game

I mean the UI is a bit.
okay its really really clunky at times.
but its got charm and style.
Sometimes UI clunk makes things feel better
But I suspect that is 100% a secret nostalgia thing
Secret nostalgia thing + it's a very intentional aesthetic choice that can feel charming, even if it's slightly cumbersome.
I do just wish there was a better way to see gem fusions rather than having to go through like 3 menu screens.
along with more stat clarification.
but outside of those things, generally I'd say its just got the heart of a twinstick, while at the same time taking many of the best parts of recent bullet heavens.
its meta progression could do with being less.... annoying, but yeah. its a real solid time.
if you want more than that I dunno. go watch Wander's video on it.
theres been a few updates since Wabbo played but. I mean I don't think its anything too different.

I quite like the demo
Completed a run on the Age of Sigmar universe, will continue the 40k later
Isn't that literally just a reskin of Vampire Survivors
I'd consider it closer to a standalone expansion than reskin
Of course it doesn't integrate into the main game
I guess a spinoff but not in the way Vampire Drafters is a spinoff

But yeah it does have some unique weapons and gimmicks even if it does share the same Vampire Survivors base
