#Steam Next Fest Demos
1 messages Β· Page 1 of 1 (latest)
Or at least, I'll try.
Feel free to suggest/discuss cool demos from the Next Fest!
It starts on Monday, but a lot of demos are already live.
Howl. No question.
Bite-sized turn based strategy with a Grimm's fairytale aesthetic.
I wish to offer torture in the form of Cook Serve Forever having put out a demo on january the 26th, releasing in april
I love the game series but I'm conflicted on how much it looks like they have changed.
Hopefully I learn more during next fest when they do a playthrough and plans explanation
If a silly and mechanically unique 3D platformer catches your interest, check out Yellow Taxi Goes Vroom.

So because this thread technically is called Steam Next Fest Demos and therefore one could argue it's also for talking about the demos you've played
I tried out the demo for Shape Shipter myself after Wander dropped it on stream, because I wanted to see what exactly happens when you get enough stars in one of the given weapons
Turns out, here's what happens: the weapons do not get stronger when they level up, but the levels persist between runs, because what leveling weapons actually does is give you points toward metaprogression
These meta upgrades are either permanent stat boosts, like "now you have more life" or "now you can dash twice in a row", or they are brand new weapons you can use in subsequent runs
Needless to say, it's not an especially interesting gameplay loop, where you just Super Crate Box your way from one enemy wave to the next with no apparent progression from beginning to end
What I would have done differently, were I developing this game, is this: a complete overhaul of the leveling system, where each weapon starts at level 1 at the beginning of every run but gains XP much quicker
Since each weapon can level up three times, the first two levels would be some branching upgrade for the weapon, like for instance the clock could evolve into "fire a smaller shockwave every half hour" or "shockwaves stun enemies for a brief time" or even something wacky like "gain a swinging pendulum"
And then when that weapon hits max level, it is permanently added to your ship for the remainder of the run, so until the run is over you'll have up to two or even three weapons active at once
Increase the danger levels of each wave to compensate, maybe add some passive items you gain from minibosses
At this point it's basically diving into bullet heaven territory, but hell, why not? It works well as a bullet heaven.
I already mentioned it in #ask-suggest-things a while back, and I don't know if they're participating in next fest, but portal dungeon's pretty cool and has a lot of content in the demo:
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1679220/Portal_Dungeon/
Oh hey Oblivion Override has a demo
Highly recommend this one
I just finished playing that one myself, and yeah, it's super nice. I just wish the card balancing could be tweaked a little bit, because I got a lot of dead draws.
Ayy Atomic Picnic got their demo out

Oh hey, speaking of card-based roguelike city builders
https://store.steampowered.com/app/2071430/Roots_of_Yggdrasil/
That said though Howl is still my #1 pick
atomic picnic demo impressions: might be quite lovely in a year. this isn't a demo, it's pre-alpha
I mean they do say "The game is still in development, but we want to encourage everyone to participate in it! We have an active Discord server, and we intend to update the demo for a while. So feel free to reach out or leave messages in the Steam forums."
yeah but the word 'demo' carries certain implications that are not met here
Demo: A proof-of-concept version of a game, typically released to the public for promotional and/or feedback purposes.
Just gonna throw in my own note. Just because something is EA doesn't stop it from being a demo. It is smart for the devs to throw their games into a festival like this to gather attention and feedback. It is its own form of marketing.
The core part of a demo is usually the limited content from what the full game has to offer; not the 'readiness' of the project
Demos are used constantly in drafts and proof of concept to market genres and design to the people up top making choices
This is mostly a conflict in natural language progression vs word definition however; because I know many people now expect demo to mean the game is just fully made and gated
Before games companies required people to show there was a market; usually by advertisements and engagement statistics. Now due to platforms, 'demos' and 'early access' end up taking that space due to lower cost. Thats why we had the massive amount of minecraft clones and all that on mobile markets
But anything after pre-production is technically able to make a demo
Oh crap, Shadows of Doubt has a next fest demo? Immersive sim hype.
'ere we go
Radio the Universe, Dungeons of Aether, even that game Bleak Sword that used to be an Apple Arcade title.
Even Teslagrad 2.

Will throw Heistgeist from my side:
HeistGeist is a story-driven RPG set in a cyberpunk version of Central Europe. Play as Alexandra, doublecrossed street-smart thief on the run after a job gone bad. 2023
Cyberpunk deckbuilder onthe non-rougelike variety
It has an actual story, where you executed heists / shadow ops, progress maps where you switch between team members executing task furthering the heist, each with their own deck.
In the demo heist you have the physical runner that progress trough the archive building, and a hacker that connects from a public space for support. The nodes for physical progress when you fight are in the Slay the Spire vein, with the added bonus of cards being of the types that combo of each other: A - comabt cards - B support cards C finishers. Each card has an additional effect based of following up a specific card type.
Hacking is more a puzzle with limited resources - you need to figure out how much to push: some nodes you want to capture, some you want to break into pieces etc.
Very hyped for this one after the demo.
I can't do discord previews, but every next fest I play a metric buttload of demos and grade all of them in a big google doc

Last case of Benedict Fox is really good. And i'm not biased just because of the surname π
Descend into a limbo of decaying memories as Benedict Fox, a self-proclaimed detective bound to his demon companion. Lovecraftian noir detective metroidvania. I hesitate to call combat soulslikey, but its definitely less hack and slash and more of hit parry, shoot to stagger. Ozzes mood.

Not entirely sure on this one, it seems to want combine Kingdom formula with hack and slash, but it does not entirely click with me so far
Sons of Valhalla combines side-scrolling combat with base-building strategy in a beautiful pixel-art Viking Age world. https://store.steampowered.com/app/1053900/Radio_the_Universe/
This is really good. It does remind me of Hyper Light Drifter which is weird because while HLD combat is lightning fast here it is more ponderous and methodical, something encouraged by the fact that you cant button mash because overkilling enemies looses you xp - you need to bring them exactly down to zero. Which is not to say that the controls feels sluggish or janky, on the contrary, Its just that all of the actions have a certain heft to them. The environment itself is nice and suitably creepy, something akin to gothic cathedral crossed with a factory and warehouse.
Radio the Universe blends heavy action, atmospheric exploration, and an evocative soundtrack to create a minimalist sojourn through a vast city eons beyond salvation. Take on the role of an immortal wanderer, endlessly traveling through a haze of reality from majestic hallways in grand architecture to dark and ominous subway systems.Survival is ...

A bit busy atm today to try it but if anyone else has a go I'd love to hear thoughts since my friend thought it'd be something I like
Chelle LOVED the chants demo.
And she's a huge heavens vault fan (except the ending IIRC?)
There's this one, which looks like it has the potential to be interesting; unfortunately, I can't try it myself to be sure, because it's 2 player co-op only.
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1812800/Umigame/
just tried to do umigame and the invite system doesnt seem to work
Bleh.
Maybe local play works, I dunno.
I just played the demo for Cook Serve Forever, and while it's stylish and plays well, there is really not much to the demo. It's more like a proof of concept, all you get is one level and a randomized menu.
didn't even see a local option
Worldless: nice but I don't have the patience
Gripper: could have been better but unfortunately these guys aren't as cool as they think they are

I can also attest that Howl is very fun. Its a very neat strategy / puzzle game. I sat down for a few minutes ended up almost 100% the demo π
Howl is a turn-based tactical folktale set in medieval times. A sinister βhowling plagueβ has ravaged the land, turning all who hear it into feral beasts. First time posting something after watching and lurking for long time but I really think that fall of porcupine could be an interesting story game to test out? It gives me similar vibes to other story games you played together with chelle and maybe it is something both of you would enjoy! (and it is cute) https://store.steampowered.com/app/1710540/Fall_of_Porcupine/
i have no clue how Radio the universe reminds of HLD
maybe A LITTLE by mood but like.... there is almost no resemblence for me
Its just that weird feeling, possibly caused by UI? But i did really like it. I was pretty thorough but apparently i missed at least one weapon in the demo π
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1958220/WitchSpring_R/
Not sure about this one, definitely cute af and hilarious, but feels somewhat simplistic and grindy. Goes on the "watch and see pile"
WitchSpring R is a story-driven RPG combining elements of simulation, collecting & crafting, and battling. Just played the demo for Worldless. Absolutely beautiful game, perfect visuals and gameplay, absolutely phenomenal. There's just one really large, glaring issue: controller support does not work at all. And keyboard controls are kind of all over.
We'll probably get to Porcupine at launch. It seems heavily story-based, and I pretty much only get one shot at those for YT.
I was leery of Witch Spring R, if only because the 'raise your witchling' tagline has weird vibes.
Unless I'm mixing it with another game.
Honestly, the demo for Fall of Porcupine has been around for ages even before Next Fest, so I just kinda left it aside.
Also I never got into Night In The Woods myself, so
Possibly something different then. Not getting any creepy vibes from this. You're just this kid witch living alone in the forest that wants to eat pies in peace and study and train. Sadly the forest gets invaded by incompetent solders on a witch hunt. So you beat them up for their dehydrated pie rations and let the forest golem guardian punt them out "Team Rocket" style π There also a cite boar mount. Basically think very simplified Atelier game

Another card-based city builder, this time around stylized to look like a cardboard cutout town. Each turn you get a set income based on the population - the bigger population the bigger the income. At set population levels you also get perks or new cards added to your card deck.
The simplest buildings just cost money, the better ones cost one of four resources: water, energy, security, and environment. The moment any resource goes into negatives you're under a "red alert" that only goes away when you're back in black. Get 3 alerts going at the same time and it is game over. There are also "victory condition" buildings with special requirements - like parking lot needing to be surrounded by roads on all sides. Fail to build them in the allotted number of turns, and you get a permanent read alert.

This one gives me Night in the Woods vibes: a platformer/adventure set in a tiny town in the middle of nowhere, the cast is anthropomorphic animals, with a hint of supernatural and dreamlike by the end of the demo. You play as an intern, in a barely functioning hospital, trying to do your best, chilling with friends after work, etc. There's also possibly a murder in progress.
My main beef with this one is that there are quick time events for medical treatments that are absurd to pull off - things like pushing the buttons and the stick on the same side of the controller plus maybe shoulder buttons as well. And apparently it's a conscious design choice (which I absolutely disagree with) because medicine is hard. On the other hand, the game has Hibernation Festival and Big Stew competition π

This one is turn base strategy with superheroes. Apparently, the villains won and now run the city with an iron fist as the Corporation - anyone showing signs of super capabilities gets literally caged and disappeared. You start off as two rookies under a lead of an "old man" probably a has been super.
The comic art parts are mostly a matter of taste, the 3d models on the other hand give me uncanny valley creeps. But I do like the gameplay - heroes are pregenerated, and have their own feel and gameplay style. You start with two and rescue more along the way, new abilities unlock as you do missions as well. My two favorite things: each hero powers up his ultimate a different way - one through backtabs, another with multi-hit attacks, etc, so you can set up teams to synergize. The other thing is that the actual powers have in-game synergies as well. If you have a hero that creates crystal armor and attacks with shards and a nearby telekinetic attacks someone with a hail of stones, it will do more damage because the crystal hero will throw him some shards to use as added ammo -and it is represented in the actual skill animation.
Twenty years ago, the supervillains won.Since then, theyβve created a dystopian city where developing super powers is a crime. Nobody has managed to slow them down, until now.Capes is a turn based superhero strategy game where you build a team of heroes and fight to take back the city.Played across a series of campaign and patrol missions, choos...

Go play Snufkin Melody of Moominvalley. Now. But in all seriousness, Moomin books were a big and bright part of my childhood and i feel the demo does a good job of reflecting the wholesomenes and weirdnes of Moomins. Snofkin comes back with his usual winter travels only to find the valley converted into parks, with obnoxious rules, prohibitions and cops. Throw away the signs, outsneek the cops, break the statues of the Park Keeper and turn the parks to nature. All to gather the inspiration to play harmonica and make valley creatures happy. In short, play Snufkin the eco terrorist simulator π
You don't need any knowledge of Rabi-Ribi to play this new game, and the combat is better besides
Even if it's only by virtue of having a weapon with actual range
https://store.steampowered.com/app/2144740/Ghostrunner_2/
Ghostrunner 2 is so much fun. If you played the first one, it is more of the same, but better - the demo has a high speed motr chase with jumping between broken bridge pieces. If you did not play the first one, its a futuristic hardcore parkour / slasher game when you're a cyber ninja on the run trough a dystopian megacity, jumping, grappling, wallruning and slashing your enemies to pieces. IT is hard as hell, because one shot, one stab and you are gone. But the checkpoints are so numerous and the load times are so short that it is a joy to play even to and old man without reflexes like me. There is just so much satisfaction when after the first 9 fails, you know where everyone is and the final attempt is just a choreographed dance of death with you ping ponging around the place and murdering everyon in seconds.
Blood will run in the highly anticipated hardcore FPP slasher set one year after the events of Ghostrunner. Adventure through a post-apocalyptic cyberpunk future that takes place after the fall of the Keymaster, a tyrant who ruled over Dharma Tower, the last refuge of mankind. Jack is back to take on the violent AI cult that has assembled outsid...

that description makes it sound as simultaneously panic-inducing and frustrating as running in a dream
really was much calmer than it sounds
only made it to about 780 in my first run
The demo for Murder on the Orient Express has made me much angrier than anticipated.
There's a puzzle where you need to check who the two people are who worked for the murder victim, but there are no clues related to that anywhere in the scene.
And it was here I learned that if you select the game's "hint" system, it just tells you the answer outright.
Somehow it's only the second worst detective game I've played this year.
No way to skip all the voiced dialogue

The demo for this one seems to be... Not working? Couldn't control my character
But it's an interesting game entirely based around Suppression as a mechanic
Suppress the enemy to steal their actions and give it to your team, use that to take the lead and win the battle.
The UI work and uh. Controls are basically nonfunctional?
I can clicky the thing and it'll do nothing but beep at me, so i'mma label it as promising but needs so much work.

If you have any knowledge of their first game, Nongunz, that's to be expected
Looked up, and yup, totaly makes sense. Gameplay is great, but im to old for this lol
Laika's out, or are you playing the demo?
The demo, I assume. The full game's not out for another week.
I already have a key actually. I was just internally panicking because I thought I missed the deadline.
laika's story went from "is this a sad postapocalypse like lisa the painful?" to "nope NOPE NOPE" fast. well, at least for my delicate sensibilities, anyway
when do you not have the cool new game though?
