#✅ - Is there any way to add an “Ask” mode alongside the current “Spec” mode?

I’ve been using Kiro for a while, and right now it only gives me two main options: Vibe and Spec Mode. The problem is that sometimes I just want to ask a simple, specific question without rewriting code or going through a full planning workflow. In those cases, Spec Mode actually makes things more complicated than they need to be.

For example, Kilocode has an Ask Mode that focuses on answering a single question or addressing one specific issue. It’s lightweight, direct, and doesn’t force you into a full spec‑writing process. The ability to switch between modes depending on what you need is incredibly useful.

On Kiro, though, if I’m not trying to generate or modify code, Spec Mode becomes a bit of a burden. It turns a simple question into a long process, and sometimes the result isn’t even aligned with what I wanted.

So I’m wondering: could Kiro add an Ask Mode—something quick, focused, and conversational, without the overhead of planning or code generation? I think it would make the tool much more flexible for different types of tasks.

This is something that we have discussed internally, but is not currenlty available as a feature - for now you have a few options:

  • add a steering file that instructs the agent to not write any code and to only discuss and explore topics with you; this works well for long sessions
  • in a regular vibe session, you can send an initial message telling kiro to not write any code or modify any changes, then have a discussion with it
