Any ring. Check the Monster Eradication goals, as there's some good rings that can be gotten from them. 1000 slimes gives you a slime charmer ring, which is essentially an immunity to slimes. 60 rock crabs gives a crabshell ring, which is a flat boost to defense. Those two are good.

You actually can afford to delay upgrading your hoe till very late I upgraded my hoe for the first time in year 1 winter

Watering cans on the other hand upgrade if you can afford but do so if the next day is going to rain, so you'll water your crops then take it to clint the next day the rain will cover for you
