For grass though you can buy a grass starter from Pierre (kind of expensive iirc), and let it grow. You can either let the animals out and eat the grass straight from the ground. Or chop the grass with Scythe and automatically turn it into hay

Just make sure the grass spread first

the chickens cant eat the grass that the fence is on top of, so every day there is a chance the grass spreads out into the chicken pen and allows them to eat. if you do run out of grass, you can make grass starter or buy some from pierre

Fenced areas just keep things more convenient and controllable for things like petting, keep animals from getting in the way when doing other stuff, and limiting where grass will spread.

Grass will naturally spread a little every day, though with enough animals, they will eat it faster than it grows.

You can place items on top of grass (so grass first) which stops animals from eating it, and it can spread from there.

All this said, you can always just buy Hay from Marnie, all animals are still profitable when buying Hay. So if the grass race becomes unfeasible that's always an option.
