I'm pretty sure the type of rod doesn't affect the size of the fishing bar aside from the Training Rod.

Stardew fishing mechanic are indeed hard for new player but you'll get used to it once you learn the pattern

You can also consume certain foods to help increase your level in fishing temporarily which can make your meter a little bigger
(Bigger meter = less room to fail)

The Training Rod is good to help you level up. The higher tier rods just give you additional bonuses when you stick stuff on them (Bait and bobbers)

that made me wonder if the training rod could catch catfish because that would be a day 3 cheat code. Sadly it cannot.

on the other hand, it can be useful if you have the special order to collect trash, because the training rod only catches trash in the mines (no algae etc)

Yeah, I believe the “lower” tiered rod you have, you’re more susceptible to catching “lower” tiered fish
