Basically, at every frame or something, if the pig is standing on a valid truffle tile (eg tillable crop tile), it has a chance to find a truffle (even if the truffle would spawn in an invalid truffle tile). Whenever it finds a truffle, it rolls against a % determined by its friendship and mood to see if it'll stop for the day. Iirc cap of 5 truffles per day. So a pig can (rarely) fail to find any truffles if it keeps failing the first check, and (also rarely) find five every day
