You cannot PLANT the ancient seed until ypu donate it, then as a reward you will get the seed from gunther and the crafting recipe to make more ancient seeds (it requires 1 ancient seed to make a viable seed pack). I would recommend saving 1 or 2 to put into the seed maker when you unlock it, because that's the easiest way to make the seeds compared to finding them in the mines. Hope this helped!
