u have ur character face a water body (e.g. ocean)
use ur fishing rod, wait until u see the cue that a fish is here, then click to start the minigame
there's 2 green bars in the mini game.
basically, u want to keep the fish icon in the left green bar as much as possible (u tap to move the green bar up/down).

when the fish is in the left green bar, the right green bar goes up.
when the fish escapes from the left green bar, right green bar goes down.
the fish is caught when the right green bar reaches the top.

as you catch more fish, you gain experience and level up eventually. at higher levels, fishing becomes easier because you get a bigger bar.

i suggest buying a training rod at 25g (from willy's shop) because it can help you get used to the mini-game.

if you are still having some trouble and just don't want to do fishing at all, if you've not hit level 1 by end of spring (and have picked up the bamboo rod from willy), u will gain a free fishing level at the end of the season. you can also buy trout soup from willy as it can increase ur fishing level temporarily (hence bigger bar size).

and quality unlocks at farming level 6

alternatively, maybe yall can split chores up - you water, they go mine ores to prep for sprinklers

100 strawberries + other crops can bring you more or less to around level 6 anyway so you would have to get ready (just a ballpark figure, could be level 5 or higher but it'll be close)

Like… if I’m on there alone, will time pause when I’m in chests/the menu etc, or will it continue to run because it’s now a multiplayer server? (I’ve never played co-op)

Yeah, it saves at the beginning of the day, so you can reset if you do anything you really regret (though it is frowned upon)
