you can use training rod if u like, if you are below level 5 - this helps increase fishing bar size to level 5 width
or, you can use crabpots or build fish ponds - these are both non-active (slow) fishing methods to increase your fishing experience - the higher level you are, the easier it becomes

if you have reached level 6, you can consider buying e.g. the trap bobber to use it with the iridium fishing rod, it slows down fish from escaping is my personal fav

if you struggle with e.g. catfish, you can befriend linus, he could send you one of that in in the mail (as long as he sends you a gift, you can reset to get a catfish)

i recommend fishing up at the mountain lake, because you could get carp - which is a fish that just stays on the bottom and barely moves (easiest fish in game), as well as bullheads (comfortable fishing pattern)

if you choose the more popular route, you basically help repair a building/restore it to its former glory, by gathering items for it - in this process, u engage with the game's chore mechanics, e.g. fishing/planting etc. through the seasons, and revitalize local economy

If you want to get ur money up with farming, sell 14 of those parsnip seeds (or all if you don't intend on finishing the community center) and by all potato seeds, fish and farm till you have enough to buy strawberry seeds, they're one time plant and continue to grow after planting

granted, u can just earn money from fetch quests/via friendship, but no spend is not possible - no selling, maybe

1. you increase your skill via crabpots/books/fish ponds- with the help of trap bobber + deluxe bait, make it as frictionless as possible, as well as the late game option that was added in 1.6 (2 other late game perks, actually)* btw also add fishing food buffs! such as dish of the sea, or trout soup, those can temporarily increase your fishing level
2. you rely on the cart to buy fishes when they appear -> but not a long term solution, you need to eventually do 1) to make it count as part of your fishing collection
3. you mod it to get rid of the problem

this is a spoiler but || you can get hardwood every day once you unlock the secret woods, its i think 5 stumps in total and it reloads everyday! and if you get any seeds from them you can plant those and make mahogany trees which are hardwood trees||

nug the stumps and kill the slimes at secret woods regularly, they both drop mahogany seeds, then replant somewhere with tree fert, chop and replant and have hundreds of hardwood in a season
