1. if new go to mountain lake and fish there in the spring. this has easy fish. or you can go to willy and by the training rod to level up your fishing skill.
2. different areas have different fish. different seasons and weather also have different fish.
3. when you can get the iridium rod from willy do so. add bait and a spinner of your choice. i'd recomend the cork bobber for a bigger green bar.
4. for harder fish eat a food that has a buff to fishing. some foods can add +4 but even a +1 to fishing helps increase the bar size
