The third one I took what I learned and had fun making things happen the right way for me, and I carried that one on into year 14 and had a blast.

To continue, if you're having trouble at low levels fishing, you can buy the Training Rod from Willy for really cheap (25 g, iirc) and it will make things a lot easier. You can only catch regular quality fish, but regular quality is better than nothing, and I usually start out using the training rod until I get a few fishing levels under my belt.

Get in the habit of watching the TV every morning before you leave the house. It will tell you when certain events are happening, and some of those events can make you money or help you with food. Salmonberry season can get you a lot of berries that, while not worth it to sell, you can get so many of them that they can keep you fed for weeks, if not months. Blackberries are good food, and can also be sold for a nice sum. Then there's an event at the beach where a lot of valuable stuff washes up on shore. You don't want to miss that.

Don't clear cut your farm. Clear out the debris and weeds, but leave tufts of grass here and there so it can grow back and fill in, giving you a steady supply of grass to cut for hay.
The same goes for trees. Cut what you need for wood, but leaving some will allow seeds to drop, which you can allow to grow, or even pick up with a tool if you want to plant them somewhere else.
A clear-cut farm may look neat, but it gives you nothing in the way of resources.
